For desktop do you have to have it connected to a router to use wifi or can you automatically access wifi without doing anything ?

Given it had wifi adapter (many older desktops don't have) You always have to MANUALLY connect it to an access point or router before you can access to internet.

What are ways of being able to use wifi because im trying get a pc and i wont be able to do it the ethernet connected to the router way so what other way is there ?
