I have an HP desktop that I've always used wirelessly without issue. Now my job needs me to use an ethernet connection, but it says there is no ethernet cable connected. I thought it may be a bad cable, but the second brand new cable isn't recognized, either. They both work on another identical model that my husband uses. I've tried resetting the modem/router, resetting the ethernet port, got a USB to Ethernet adapter. Nothing is working.

Hi @MissKitty424,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your PC!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
1. Check Ethernet Port and Cable
- Verify the Ethernet port on your desktop for any physical damage or dust.
- Ensure that the Ethernet cable is securely connected to both the desktop and the router or modem.
- Since the cables work on another identical model, it’s less likely the issue is with the cable.
2. Reset Network Settings
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Navigate to Network & Internet > Status.
- Scroll down and click on Network reset.
- Follow the instructions to reset network settings and restart your PC.
3. Verify Network Adapter in Device Manager
- Press Windows + X and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Look for your Ethernet adapter (usually named something like "Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller").
- If there is a yellow exclamation mark or red cross on the adapter, right-click on it and select Update driver or Enable device.
- If updating the driver doesn’t work, you can right-click and select Uninstall device, then restart your computer to let Windows re-detect and reinstall the driver.
4. Change Ethernet Adapter Settings
- In Device Manager, right-click the Ethernet adapter and select Properties.
- Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
- Go to the Advanced tab and ensure that settings such as Speed & Duplex are set to Auto Negotiation.
5. Update or Roll Back Ethernet Driver
- Go to the HP Support website and search for your model to download the latest Ethernet driver.
- If the issue started after a recent update, try rolling back the driver.
- In Device Manager, right-click the Ethernet adapter, select Properties > Driver tab, and click Roll Back Driver if available.
I hope this helps.
