OMEN by HP Obelisk Desktop 875-1045m CTO

My Omen Obelisk 875-1045m desktop PC is being hard capped at 100Mbps through the Moria2 (HP 86D3 (AM4)) motherboard's integrated Realtek Gaming GbE Family Controller, which is rated at 10/100/1000Mbps, and even shows as such via Device Manager's "Speed & Duplex" setting.

I've tried changing it from Auto-Negotiation to 1.0Gbps Full Duplex to no avail. The ethernet cable is also a verified Cat5e cable, notably because running the same cable into the same machine via an Ethernet to USB Adapter delivers the 1.0Gbps/1000Mbps speed (albeit with a shaky connection due to notorious driver issues from the ASIX brand cutting the adapter off under heavy loads.)

What's especially confusing about the ordeal is that, if I monitor the Link Speed under Settings>Network & Internet>Advanced Settings while changing the Speed/Duplex or any other advanced setting in device manager, the moment it disconnects to apply the changes it shows a Link Speed of 1000Mbps, but then locks back at 100Mbps when it reconnects.

This has also been tested with the same results on two separate modems, and yes, the ethernet cable works fine on other machines and via the previously stated Ethernet to USB Adapter.

It sounds like you've already done some troubleshooting, but it's possible there are still a few things to check.

 

  • Driver Update: Ensure that the driver for the Realtek Gaming GbE Family Controller is up to date. Sometimes, even if it shows as up to date in Device Manager, manually downloading and installing the latest driver from the HP website can resolve compatibility issues.
  • Firmware Update: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your motherboard. Sometimes, firmware updates can address issues related to network connectivity and performance.
  • Power Management Settings: Make sure that power management settings aren't causing the network adapter to operate at a lower speed to conserve power. In Device Manager, navigate to the network adapter's properties and look for any power management options that might be affecting its performance.
  • Check Router/Modem Settings: It's worth checking the settings on your router or modem to ensure that it's not limiting the connection speed for that specific device. Look for any QoS (Quality of Service) settings or bandwidth limitations that might be applied.
  • Try Different Ports/Cables: Even though you've verified the cable as Cat5e, try using different Ethernet ports on your router or switch, and if possible, try a different Ethernet cable just to rule out any potential issues with the hardware.
  • Reset Network Settings: Sometimes, resetting network settings on your computer can help resolve connectivity issues. You can do this by going to Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset, then follow the prompts to reset your network settings.
  • Check for Interference: Nearby electronic devices or even physical obstructions can sometimes interfere with network signals. Try relocating your computer or router to see if that improves the connection speed.
