HDMI splitters are in the $10 USD price range and can be found in a number of places.  The one in and two out will allow your monitor to be connected and the second monitor (or projector) will show the exact same display.  This is typically used in classrooms where the student needs to see what the teacher is doing.

 

It will not extend your screen, only mirror it.

 

If you want to extend your screen then get VGA to HDMI converter, also in the same same price range.  I have found that buying a used VGA display at goodwill is usually cheaper than buying the converter let alone the HDMI monitor
