Recently, my HP laptop started consuming a lot of data.When I checked the data usage , it showed that most of the data has been used by the System. What does that mean and how to get rid of this?

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, 
To get the answer to this question, by default, the laptop keeps some apps running in the background, and they consume more data. 

For example, if your watching YouTube in HD format then data consumption will be more. Reducing the video quality will reduce the data usage.
