Intermittently cannot connect to the internet. When I check the connection on the toolbar, it shows a globe and not the usual wi-fi signal indicator. It stays like that until I click on it and when I do, it brings up the Network & Internet settings window. My wi-fi connection at first shows not connected but then connects and I have internet again. Please advise, thanks!

@blfarrell, Welcome to HP Support Community!

Did you reinstall the network drivers? or update it from the HP website using a wired internet connection?

While you respond to that, I recommend the below steps:

Go to Device manager > select the WIFI drivers under network adapter> Right click go to properties  > Under properties go to Power Management Tab> Uncheck  "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

If the issue persists, continue with the below steps:

  • If your computer has a wireless key or button on or near the keyboard and the wireless activity light is off or amber in color, then press the key or button to enable your wireless adapter. This key might be the F10 key, F12 key or labeled with a symbol of an airplane.

  • If wireless activity comes on or the activity light turns blue, you have enabled wireless on your system. Try connecting to the Internet again. If problems persist, continue using these steps.

  • If your computer does not have a wireless key or the wireless activity lights remain off or orange then continues using these steps.

  • Click Start, type troubleshooting into the Search field.

  • Select troubleshooting from the search results.

  • Click Network and Internet.

  • Click Internet Connections

For more details consider using the HP Guided Troubleshooter:

Click here to access it (simply select your description of the issue from the bottom of the screen to gain access to the next set of steps that should resolve your concern).

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks for the reply! No, I did not try the driver because the windows 10 driver is a 3.0.2.201 3/26/16 and the one on HP is a 10.0.0.318 7/22/15 so being that the versions were so different and the windows one was newer, did not want to risk it? I was also thinking maybe I could just replace the NIC with one that could do 5G. I know it has to be a PCI express half-length mini card but not sure about compatibility, thoughts?

Fyi, my NIC is a Qualcomm Atheros AR9485

Run a wireless card test on your computer using the below steps:

  • Download and install the HP Hardware diagnostics tool from this link
  • Once installed, shut down your computer.
  • Wait for a minute.
  • Turn the computer On and keep tapping F2 repeatedly on startup to enter system diagnostics.
  • Select the component test and run a wireless test on your computer.
    • Refer to this HP Article for assistance.

If the test fails or does not detect the wireless card, it could be faulty.

If it passes the tests, install all available windows and HP updates using a wired network to resolve the issue.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Cannot get from that link either, I get "An invalid set of parameters has been specified in the url.". I was able to download HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows from the HP Support Assistant. When I try to access diags during boot as you previously described, I get the menu and the first thing that comes up is language selection. When I select english, it just boots to windows normally. I tried several times with the same result. I can run the diags from windows and all tests pass but not sure how good that is versus the boot version of diags?

Try creating a new user account and try again-

1. Tap the Windows icon.

2. Select Settings.

3. Tap Accounts.

4. Select Family & other users.

5. Tap "Add someone else to this PC."

6. Select "I don't have this person's sign-in information."

7. Select "Add a user without a Microsoft account."

8. Enter a username, type the account's password twice, enter a clue and select Next.

9. Tap the Windows icon.

10. Select the User icon at the upper left corner of the Start menu.

11. Select the new user. You'll then sign into your account with your password from step 8.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
