Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I live in a condo and according to my internet provider, my HP Pavilion laptop is connecting to my neighbor's access point instead of mine.  My internet goes off and on consistently because of this.  My modem is located on the ceiling in a closed box so I cannot get at it.  They said that there is nothing that they can do and that I need to contact HP.  Any suggestions?

If your HP Pavilion laptop is consistently connecting to your neighbor's access point instead of your own, you can try the following steps to address the issue:

Forget the Neighbor's Network:

  • Open the list of available Wi-Fi networks on your laptop.
  • Find your neighbor's network in the list, click on it, and choose the option to forget or disconnect from the network.
  • Ensure that your own Wi-Fi network is the preferred or default network.

Check Network Priority:

  • In Windows 10, go to "Settings" > "Network & Internet" > "Wi-Fi."
  • Click on "Manage known networks."
  • Remove any unwanted or neighbor's networks from the list.
  • Ensure that your network is listed and has a higher priority.

Update Wi-Fi Drivers:

  • Ensure that your Wi-Fi drivers are up to date. You can check for updates on the HP website or through the Device Manager on your laptop.

Reset Network Settings:

  • Open the Command Prompt as an administrator (right-click on the Start button and select "Command Prompt (Admin)" or "PowerShell (Admin)").
  • Type the following commands one by one and press Enter after each: 
  • netsh winsock reset
    netsh int ip reset
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
     

Adjust Wi-Fi Channel Settings:

  • Log in to your router's settings (usually accessed via a web browser, and the address is often something like 192.168.1.1).
  • Change the Wi-Fi channel to one with less interference. This may require checking the user manual for your router.

Physical Inspection:

  • If possible, check if there are any physical obstructions or interferences affecting the Wi-Fi signal. Also, make sure that your laptop is within a reasonable range of your Wi-Fi router.
