Hi - my HP laptop is turning on, my mouse is turning on but the keyboard has suddenly stopped working so I can't log in. I have replaced the 2 batteries with new ones. I have removed then put back in the mini usb (?) in the back of the laptop. Any other tips? Can a keyboard just die and need replacing? I bought my Pavilion all in one in 2017. Thanks!

Hi @viv79

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how inconvenient it feels when the keyboard suddenly stops responding, especially after you’ve already tried replacing the batteries and reseating the USB receiver.

You’ve done the right first steps, so let’s go through a few more checks that can help determine whether the keyboard can be revived or if replacement is needed.

Check USB Receiver

  • Make sure the wireless receiver is firmly connected to a working USB port.
  • Try different USB ports on the Pavilion All-in-One to rule out a port issue.

Test Keyboard on Another Device

  • If possible, plug the receiver into another Windows PC.
  • If the keyboard works there, the issue is with the original system’s settings or drivers.
  • If it does not work, the keyboard itself may have failed.

Re-sync the Keyboard

  • Some HP wireless keyboards have a connect or sync button (often on the underside or near the battery compartment).
  • Press the connect button on the keyboard, then press the connect button on the USB receiver if present.
  • Wait for the keyboard light to blink and test typing again.

Check Device Manager

  • On your Pavilion, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager with the mouse.
  • If you can’t log in, try connecting a temporary wired USB keyboard to access Windows.
  • Once inside Windows, open Device Manager (right-click Start > Device Manager).
  • Expand “Keyboards” and check if the wireless keyboard is listed. If it is, right-click and choose “Uninstall device,” then restart the PC to let Windows reinstall the driver.

Update Drivers

  • Visit HP Software and Driver Downloads.
  • Enter your Pavilion All-in-One model number and check for driver updates, especially chipset and input device drivers.

Check for Interference

  • Wireless keyboards can be affected by nearby devices (routers, cordless phones, Bluetooth devices).
  • Move the receiver closer to the keyboard or remove other wireless devices temporarily.

Final Test

  • If none of the above restores function, and the keyboard fails on multiple systems, it is likely the keyboard hardware has reached end of life and will need replacing.

The key is to isolate whether the keyboard or the PC is at fault. By testing on another device and re-syncing, you’ll know if it’s a communication issue or a hardware failure.
