I have an HP Envy Desktop pc. I am unable to connect to the internet. My wifi is connected but I cannot open an internet page. I get a message that says to check my proxy and firewall. Please help. I know nothing about these settings.

Hi @PaintGal
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're encountering an issue with your internet connection due to proxy and firewall settings. Even though your Wi-Fi is connected, the proxy and firewall might be blocking your access to the internet. Let's go through some simple steps to help you fix this issue.
1. Check Proxy Settings
A proxy is an intermediary server that can be used to filter or route traffic, and sometimes it can cause issues if incorrectly configured. Here's how to disable the proxy:
- Open the Settings: Press the Windows key + I to open the Settings app.
- Go to Network & Internet: Click on Network & Internet.
- Proxy Settings: In the left menu, click on Proxy.
- Disable Proxy: Under Manual proxy setup, make sure the Use a proxy server option is turned off.
- If it's already off, try toggling it to on, saving, then back to off again.
Note: Some networks, especially business or school networks, might require a proxy for internet access. But if you're on a home network, you usually don’t need a proxy.
2. Check Firewall Settings
The firewall might be blocking your internet connection. To check and adjust your firewall settings:
Open Windows Security: Press the Windows key and type Windows Security, then press Enter.
Firewall & Network Protection: In the Windows Security window, click on Firewall & Network Protection.
Allow an App Through Firewall:
- Click on Allow an app through firewall.
- Check if your web browser (such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge) is listed and allowed to communicate through the firewall.
- If your browser is not listed, click on Change settings and Allow another app, then find your browser and add it.
Reset Windows Firewall: If you suspect the firewall settings might be causing issues, you can reset the firewall to its default settings:
- Open the Start Menu and type Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel, go to System and Security and then Windows Defender Firewall.
- On the left, click Restore defaults and follow the instructions to reset your firewall.
3. Flush DNS Cache
Sometimes clearing the DNS cache can resolve internet connectivity issues:
- Open Command Prompt: Press the Windows key, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Flush DNS: In the Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter: ipconfig /flushdns
- After it completes, restart your computer and try accessing the internet again.
4. Reset Network Settings
If your network settings have become corrupted or misconfigured, resetting them might help:
- Open Settings: Press the Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Go to Network & Internet: Click Network & Internet.
- Network Reset: Scroll down to the bottom and click on Network Reset.
- Reset Now: Click Reset now and follow the on-screen instructions. This will reset all network-related settings to their default values.
- After resetting, you will need to reconnect to your Wi-Fi network.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
