Hi @KSgirl5,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP laptop's screen glows with a slight white/grey light when in sleep mode, it typically indicates that the backlight remains on even though the display is supposed to be off. This can be due to several reasons, including firmware issues, incorrect power settings, or driver problems. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:
1. Check Power Settings
Ensure that the power settings are correctly configured to turn off the display during sleep mode.
- Adjust Power Settings:
- Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep.
- Under Screen, set the time to turn off the display.
- Ensure that When plugged in, PC goes to sleep after and When on battery power, PC goes to sleep after are set correctly.
- Click on Additional power settings.
- Click on Change plan settings next to your selected power plan.
- Click on Change advanced power settings.
- Expand the Display section and ensure that Turn off display after is configured correctly.
2. Update Display Drivers
Outdated or corrupted display drivers can cause issues with the screen not turning off properly.
- Update Display Drivers:
- Right-click on the Start Menu and select Device Manager.
- Expand the Display adapters section.
- Right-click on your display adapter and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
- Alternatively, visit the HP Support website to download the latest display drivers for your specific laptop model.
3. Update BIOS/UEFI Firmware
Sometimes, a firmware update can resolve power management issues.
- Update BIOS/UEFI:
- Go to the HP Support website.
- Enter your laptop model and download the latest BIOS/UEFI firmware.
- Follow the instructions provided to install the firmware update.
4. Check for Windows Updates
Make sure your Windows OS is up to date, as updates often include fixes for power management issues.
- Check for Updates:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Click on Check for updates and install any available updates.
5. Disable Fast Startup
Fast Startup can sometimes cause issues with the display not turning off properly.
- Disable Fast Startup:
- Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Click on Choose what the power buttons do.
- Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended).
- Click Save changes.
6. Run Power Troubleshooter
7. Perform a Hard Reset
Performing a hard reset can sometimes resolve power management issues.
- Perform a Hard Reset:
- Turn off the laptop and disconnect all external devices.
- Remove the battery if it is removable (skip this step if the battery is internal and not easily removable).
- Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to drain any residual power.
- Reconnect the battery and power on the laptop.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
