Further update on the new driver. While the driver does appear to resolve the thru-put speed of the RealTek card, some continued experimentation revealed what appeared to be some instability in actual use. Cursor instability, run-on typing and webpages that open strangely, if at all, are symptoms which appear only while using the RealTek card with the new driver.
I'm sticking to my plan of using the patch cable from router to desktop until I've satisfied myself about the overall desktop. Once I have a high degree of confidence about the desktop, I'll consider whether to use my nearly acquired Intel adapter or just stay with the hardwire option. HP and Realtek might get the driver situation figured out in 8 or 10 more iterations.
Thanks again for helping me through quality control learning experience.

You're very welcome, Len.
I recommend that you query this notebook model from time to time and see if HP releases any newer drivers for the Realtek Wi-Fi card.

That is where I got the driver I gave you from.
