I was suddenly unable to use my Internet so I decided to reboot laptop but got error message to reset pin. However the internet is not connected and if I selected the icon I get a greyed out screen showing I am in airplane. My older computers had a key button with a radio tower on it to toggle airplane on or off. I have tried to discover which action key it is, but no idea and it is ridiculous because when I directly connect laptop to modem, nothing happens.. UIt seem that this problem happens a lot and is a known problem with HP envy laptops for both windows 10 and 11. I am unable to open anything on the laptop such as settings, device manager. I have tried using all the recommendations online, but at a loss to know what do. My desktop running Windows 10 is directly connected by Ethernet and phone and iPad and Kindles connect. I use McAfee and have checked for malware and viruses and was able to get into recovery program. I spent the time to get the bitlock recovery number but I am at a loss what I should do next. Basically laptop was having a problem loading the browsers and then froze. I have no restore points so system restore in out.

Hi @Peggylgb
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're in a tricky situation with your HP Envy laptop. Here are some steps you can take to try and resolve the issue with the airplane mode and the PIN reset:
1. Toggle Airplane Mode Using Keyboard Shortcuts
HP laptops often have specific function keys for toggling airplane mode. Look for keys with an airplane icon (usually F12 on HP laptops). If you find it, try pressing it while holding the Fn key.
2. Reset Network Settings via Recovery Mode
Since you mentioned you can access recovery mode, try resetting the network settings from there:
Boot into Recovery Mode:
- Turn on the laptop and immediately start pressing the F11 key repeatedly until you see the recovery menu.
Select Troubleshoot:
- Choose Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, and look for Command Prompt.
Reset Network Settings:
- In Command Prompt, type the following commands one at a time, pressing Enter after each:
Reboot the Laptop.
3. Try Safe Mode with Networking
If you can access Safe Mode:
- Boot into Recovery Mode again (as described above).
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the restart, press 5 or F5 to enter Safe Mode with Networking.
- Once in Safe Mode, check if you can toggle airplane mode or connect to the internet.
4. Use Ethernet Directly
If you're still having trouble with Wi-Fi, try connecting the laptop directly to your router using an Ethernet cable. If the laptop doesn't recognize the connection:
- Ensure the cable is working (test it with another device).
- Check for any physical Ethernet port toggle (some models have a switch).
5. Reset PIN without Internet
If you’re still prompted for a PIN and can’t reset it without an internet connection, you might need to reset your Microsoft account password from another device:
- Go to the Microsoft account password reset page.
- Follow the prompts to reset your password.
- Once you’ve reset it, try to log in again.
6. Perform a Hard Reset
If you haven’t tried this already, performing a hard reset can sometimes resolve strange issues:
- Shut down the laptop.
- Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
- Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then start the laptop.
7. Use Recovery Options
If nothing else works, consider using recovery options to reset your PC. You can do this from the recovery environment:
- Boot into Recovery Mode (as described before).
- Select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
- Choose either to keep your files or remove everything, depending on your preference.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
