I often use Cast desktop with Chromecast rather than my HDMI cable. On my previous laptop, a Dell, this would mirror the screen to my tv, but the sound would only come from the tv.
On my new HP laptop, it mutes the sound by default. When I unmute the sound, it plays sound on both laptop and tv, with the lag between them giving an echo. Turning the sound down on the laptop turns the sound down on the tv as well.
I've searched the internet for solutions, and found that all the people having this problem are using HP laptops.
I've tried all the usual things, rebooting chromecast, changing hdmi port, searching for updates on realtek drivers, etc.
I'm certainly no expert, but my guess is that I can't get the computer to use the digital output for the Chromecast, it only works for the hdmi cable When using the hdmi cable, it works as it should, playing video on both computer and screen, but only playing audio on tv.

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,
Try this workaround:
- Click on the speaker icon, the volume control slider opens.
- You have to right-click on the speaker icon to see the following menu: Select Open Volume mixer to open it.
- Here you can change the volume for individual applications also select playback device.
In the Settings app, navigate to System, and then to Sound. On the right side of the window, click or tap on the currently selected playback device under "Choose your output device."
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi!
I've navigated to System > Sound > Volume mixer. On the right hand side, under Output device, there is a dropdown menu. It only has one choice, Speaker (Realtek(R) Audio).
Further down there is a section labeled Apps with a dropdown menu for output device. It only has one choice, default. Below that there are two entries, Google Chrome and VLC. They both have dropdown menus for Output device, and both only have one option, Default.
So there is nothing I can change.
