Airplane mode depends on the Wireless configuration (that is) already set up in your device.

 

Airplane mode simply switches on / off that configuration.

 

If the Wireless configuration is not set up, if it has lost contact with your network, if there are configuration errors, Airplane mode cannot have any effect.

 

How you set / configure / correct the Wirless setup depends on the device, the drivers for that device, and the network to which you are trying to connect.
