Hi @Anna1602,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP computer is not responding to the keyboard, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try.

Check Physical Connections

  • For wired keyboards: Ensure the USB connector is firmly plugged into the computer. Try different USB ports.
  • For wireless keyboards: Ensure the keyboard is powered on and the batteries are not dead. Reconnect the keyboard using its receiver or Bluetooth settings.

Test the Keyboard on Another Device

  • Plug the keyboard into another computer or device to verify if the keyboard itself is functional.

Restart Your Computer

  • A simple restart can often resolve temporary issues with drivers or connections.

Use an On-Screen Keyboard

  • Use the on-screen keyboard as a temporary solution:
    • Windows: Press Ctrl + Windows Key + O to bring up the on-screen keyboard.
    • Mac: Go to System Preferences > Accessibility > Keyboard > Enable Accessibility Keyboard.

Check for Driver Issues

  • Open Device Manager:
    1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
    2. Expand Keyboards.
    3. Look for any warning icons. If found:
      • Right-click the keyboard and select Update Driver.
      • Restart the computer if prompted.

Check for Software Conflicts

  • Boot the computer into Safe Mode to see if the issue persists:
    • Windows:
      1. Hold Shift while restarting to access the Advanced Startup menu.
      2. Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
      3. Press 4 to boot into Safe Mode.
    • Mac: Restart while holding the Shift key.

BIOS/UEFI Settings

  • Test if the keyboard works outside the operating system:
    • Restart the computer and repeatedly press the F2, F10, or Esc key (depending on your model) to enter the BIOS/UEFI.
    • If the keyboard works in BIOS, the issue is likely with the operating system or drivers.

Reset the Keyboard Settings

  • Windows:
    1. Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language > Keyboard Settings.
    2. Ensure the correct keyboard layout is selected.
  • Mac:
    1. Go to System Preferences > Keyboard.
    2. Verify settings under Input Sources.

Test Another Keyboard

  • If possible, connect another keyboard to see if the problem persists. This will help identify if the issue is hardware-related.

Hardware Check

  • If the keyboard still does not work:
    • For laptops, check if a specific key or the entire keyboard is affected.
    • External keyboards can sometimes fail due to hardware damage.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
