> I don’t think you have an HP computer anymore.

It's HP all right.   All I did, in the end, was replace the wireless card with an absolutely identical surplus HP unit from eBay.

(I did not need to swap the Seagate hard drive, but I did so as I don't like the remapped sectors part, and I replaced it with a WD, the brand my other HP computers use anyway.)

Your old computer likely had the same problem...some internal card, likely wireless, was putting noise on the computer bus (circuit lines) at powerup, confusing the temp sensor/fan control chip.  Would not surprise me if it had the exact same card, they were used in a lot of HP computers apparently and are the size of a matchbook.

I do not like mysteries, and was determined to solve this one.

I am currently using the P7-1222, and use it a lot.  It has not hiccuped since the wireless card swap.

I hope HP techs are made aware of this.

My HP Pavilion desktop computer finally quit on me last year. I had had such a horrible experience with customer service that I completely ruled out calling to have the problem addressed. I don't even know what's really wrong with it. It could be something very simple or it it could be that there is no solution. Either way I moved on. It's not fair though that a consumer has to give up their right to have a functioning product that they paid good money for, just out of frustration. I wish HP would do the honorable thing and just replace my computer. I won't hold my breath though. I am hoping that this company pays a high cost for the poor and shameful way they treat their customers. It makes me mad that my thousand plus dollars went down the drain but it's really not worth my peace of mind and contentment to fight with dishonorable people over my rights. I give up.

My HP P7-1222 continues to have intermittent rapid fan speed at powerup.  The problem actually never stopped, and considering every internal part, CPU, wireless card, power supply, hard drive, etc. has been replaced (the MB twice), I conclude the problem really is firmware.

I just reset the computer when it happens and live with it.  If the computer dies, it goes on the trash heap.

I also conclude HP is incapable of supporting this machine.  Their customer service was worse than useless.

Take that for what it's worth.

I bought a HP desktop with Vista in late 2007 and it gave a fan huff every time it was started for years.  I figured it was normal.   Just recently, I updated the BIOS and strangely, the huff is gone.   I just thought some person reading these comments might be interested in what is the most likely cause of this syndrome.

I removed the heatsink cleaned it and applied new thermal grease solving the issue on a TouchSmart 300.
