I have spent the last two days scouring the internet trying to solve my issue with my brand new HP 2310m, and while it is a bit different than the issue this thread was posted about, my "custom scaling" is greyed out as well.
My issue is the massive border of blank space on either side of nearly every web page I visit. For example, my blog page is literally no more than a 7" strip down the center of the screen, with 6.5" of blank "border" area on either side. The text is tiny & so are my photos. I just upgraded to this brand new system with a 23" monitor, yet the display on my previous 21" monitor was far larger. I've tried everything I know to do to fix this issue because I love the look of this monitor & the picture quality. Unfortunately, I'm about to tear my hair out. I've checked resolution, font size, checked & for & downloaded the latest drivers, etc - seems the scaling option is what I need to fix this issue & I cannot access it. Great.

I am currently using DVI input and it works perfectly. I am keeping the monitor because the display quality is excellent. There is definitely something wrong with the HDMI connection. Since I am using this monitor with my PC, I can live with only DVI connection.

I am having the same problem with both a 2310 and a 2710 monitor - both overscan when using HDMI. When using a VGA cable everythings works properly - both laptop and monitor are using 1920 x 1080 as expected. When using an HDMI cable, the HP monitor cuts off all of the edges. I've tried the laptop with other monitors (Dell) and they all have worked 100%. It looks like HP's monitors do not work properly. Has ANYONE at HP ever thought of actually hooking up an HP monitor to an HP laptop to see if they work together??? Just a thought.
Also, I called tech support on this issues. I was passed from Laptop support, to Monitor support. Then disconnected. I called back to Monitor support and was transfered back to Laptop support. Clueless. The woman actaully asked me if I had the HDMI cable plugged into the VGA port! After almost two hours on the phone, she came to the conclusion that my HDMI port was bad and I had to send the laptop back to HP (the laptop was two days old). Finally after all of that I got another 10 minute sales pitch from her to purchase "extended care" protection. It was just a joke.
My final solution is to just return the monitor and buy a different brand.

Donaldsa,
I feel your pain. The tech support is just horrible. The monitor actually produces excellent screen images when it works. I use DVI with my desktop computer and it works fine. I got mine at a huge discount so I am keeping it. The speakers are very weak anyway so no real benefits of using HDMI. I am really disappointed at how HP tech support handles the calls. The tech support is a joke.

I found that the picture is BEAUTIFUL on the monitor through VGA !!! That's where HP is failing. I am so down on them because I really wanted this monitor to work. They put out a great looking product with a stupid defect of cutting off the edges and making it impossible to access the menu function that should fix it. Rather than provide excellent customer support and saying "wow, we should look into this" they go with deny, deny, deny.
I did see someone posted that their DVI input worked fine. That may be an answer for some, but most devices such as blu ray players use HDMI because it also transmits audio.
While I'm disappointed in HP over this, I'm not abandoning the company. I won't buy another HP monitor, but this weekend I bought a wireless HP 6500 Officejet. So far so good. Hopefully if I try to print pictures it doesn't cut off the edges like the monitors : ]

I recently bought the hp s5660f along with the 2310 monitor in part because I liked the idea of the HDMI/blueray capabilities of both. I initially hooked it up via DVI and the pictures fine. From what I'm gathering here, I shouldn't bother hooking up the HDMI cable? If so, why would hp design these products with the HDMI inputs if these problems exist? Does anyone have any more updates or thoughts?

Because all the HP tech support people know how to do is troll the boards and say "Did you try a new driver?" "Tech support means nothing any more, not even for a once trustworthy company like HP. When HP says "tech support" they mean "people who read from a script and then yell at you for being right when they can't solve your problem."
I previously said I would still buy HP and bought a printer, but when I went to buy a new laptop last week I found myself avoiding the HP laptops. Printers are pretty straight forward, but when I thought about having to call HP for any kind of tech problem I fell to the ground in a fetal position and cried due to the post-traumatic-TECH-disorder HP inflicted upon me.
