I have an HP Pavilion HPE h8-1050 Desktop PC (released in 2011), which has an AMD Radeon HD 6850 graphics card. I am wondering if it is possible to upgrade this card to one that would be 4k compatible. I am wanting to upgrade to a 4k TV/monitor for use with this desktop. Can you recommend a 4K card that would be compatible with this HP PC? Any idea/suggestions?

@tjohnst, welcome to the forum.
All newer high resolution video cards require UEFI in the motherboard instead of a Legacy/standar BIOS. HP didn't begin using UEFI until mid-October, 2012. The BIOS in your motherboard can't be upgraded to UEFI. I suggest that you choose a manufacturer and contact their Tech Support for help with choosing the best card for your system. They are the experts on their products. I don't want to recommend a care because it is very difficult to know which newer cards will work in older computers. The retailer will pay shipping to you, but you pay to return a card that doesn't work.

Hi,
Please check the following posts to see viable options first:

There are many articles about this topic in general, such as:

My suggestion:
Step 1: Check your machine
(a) Power supply : It must have enough wattage to run. You may have to upgrade it if required.
(b) Physical slot : Does it have phisical room to accommodate new card,
(c) BIOS: Update BIOS to the latest.
Step 2: Make a short list of available cards mentioned above
Step 3: Buy new card and install to your machine.
Regards.
