HPw2216h monitor
Microsoft Windows 11

I am using an ASUS ZenBook laptop connected to an old HP w2216h monitor, NVIDIA graphics card. The monitor is connected with an HDMI cable through a Plugable USB dock. Most times (not always) when I close the lid the display settings change from "Extend these displays" to "Show only on 2." Often times the HP monitor is off and I don't know why my laptop screen is dark until I realize that everything has shifted over to the HP.

I contacted Plugable and they suggested I try it without the dock. Same problem. They ran a diagnostic and noted that the HP monitor is old and to try updating the drivers. I did that but it made no difference.

I did not have this problem on my previous Lenovo with Windows 10 and Intel graphics.

I've seen a few others with the same problem, but with no good solution. e.g. https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/External-Monitor-Screen-Settings/m-p/... . (The proposed solution is not helpful; it assumes the OP does not know how to set up multiple monitors.)
