Pavilion m7585 desktop
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello,

My question about my HP computer's BIOS is two-fold, so I will post both parts separately, otherwise it could get very confusing.

(Despite having signed up to HP Total Care following the purchase of my desktop computer, I have never been informed of any updates.)

The computer is a 64-bit HP Pavilion Media Center TV m7585.uk (model RE467AA–ABU) with ASUS motherboard (P5BW-LA, Rev. 1.05, Basswood) with Intel P965 chipset (I.D. 2812), socket LGA 775, Core2 Duo CPU E6400 @ 2.13 GHz, with 8GB DDR2 RAM and BIOS by Phoenix Technologies 3.03 dated 2006/07/14 (Core Version 6.0) and Win 7 64-bit Ultimate SP1. Due to its age, the original HDD has been imaged over onto an SSD (Samsung 850 EVO; MZ-75E1T0B).

I have recently had a look on HP's website and have found a “critical update” (3.17) of BIOS for my motherboard under the original OS (Win XP 32-bit).

1) Can I perform the update, even though the desktop now runs a Win 7 64-bit, or should I attach another disk and install the original OS (Win XP) in order to perform this update? This critical update is dated Oct. 5, 2007 so pre-dates Win 7.

2) How do I back up the existing BIOS, in case something goes wrong during its update and I am forced to reinstall the original BIOS? Does HP have some backup utility for BIOS that I can download?

3) What procedure would I then need to follow to reinstall the original BIOS?

NB. Despite still having the original HDD, the disk was reformatted and Win 7 installed, so I am concerned that the HP BIOS crisis utility may no longer function. I have been in touch with the manufacturer of the motherboard (ASUS), but they declined to assist me in this saying that mine is an OEM motherboard and that the support for this product is offered strictly by HP.

Thank you very much, indeed!

Hello Peteuk,

There is no problem if yu update the Bios, even you are running windows 7.

Here are some tips to run it without any problem

- this is the link when you can download the Bios Driver http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software9/COL20731/pv-54525-1/sp35153.exe

- after downloading it, right click on the SP35153.exe file, and then properties, then go to the tap of compatibility, and click on Run this program on compatibility mode.

-choose the opcion of windows XP

-Apply the changes and execute the file as administrator.

Please let me know if there is anything else i can do for you.

That's great, thank you. Does that .exe file automatically create a back-up of the existing BIOS? What about points 2 and 3? Could you, please, address those as well?

About the rollback of the Bios, we can do it manually if something goes wrong.

If the Bios can't be updated the computer saves a file and it will automatically rollback to the version it was before.

About the point 3, it is not clear for me, could you please explain it a little bit different for me i would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Regards

In point 3, I am asking how I should proceed manually and in the correct way to reinstall the original BIOS (i.e., how does one create a USB to use to flash the BIOS with the original file), because with your solution, I need to rely solely on HP's software to do it automatically. I have seen many users' posts about their BIOS upgrades failing and their motherboard becoming so-called "brick" (i.e., useless).
