I have had issues with this pc,since I purchased it from someone off of KSL classifieds,he said he repaired and sold them.It freezes alot when I am online,or when I am using the ccleaner.I usually have to restart, this time it will not start up.It says disk read error,so I restarted and run through Diagnostics.Everything PASSED except for BOOT PATH:error code BIOHD-5.Suggestions:contact HP Support. So,I did,the guy is very hard to understand, everytime I ask a question,he does not reply.I say 'hello',he says"I am here Jason".But,doesn't answer my questions, and keeps telling me to hold on,(3min-6-min)I am waiting, then he replies'I am back, what can I help you with".I tell him, then he replies"it is either the hard drive is about to expire or the motherboard, and you need to take it in to be serviced".I will not,I have had enough of playing games with support,I really need answers. Can I fix this error, and if so,how do I do this? The system is HP Pavilion Media center m8417c,operating system/Windows 7.The error code occurred after I downloaded Firefox web browser, but it has always freezed up on me everyday 2 or 3 times daily, since I purchased.

Hi Serenitymine,

Did you receive a set of HP recovery disks from the previous owner of your PC?

If not, you are going to have to purchase a set from Computer Surgeons (CS) as it appears that your HDD is failing. Enter m8417c in the CS search box. You now have Win 7 installed but I believe this model shipped from HP with Vista, 64 bit, installed.

Here is the HP Software and driver download site for your PC. Win Vista is the only HP supported operating system listed.

Test your HDD by using this HP support document. While in BIOS check that the HDD and CD/DVD drives are present. If not, you may have a mainboard problem.

Good luck!

Jaco

How can I check to see what BIO's I have?BIOS 6 or BIOS 7?

HP Recommended

Hi,

Click Start, in search box type msinfo32.exe.

The BIOS version is listed in System Summary. For example: BIOS version/date:  AMI  8.18, 9/1/2013

When replacing the HDD, if required, check the failed HDD size and purchase a replacement drive that is at least equal to the failed HDD. Also, your PC does not support GPT, so don't purchase a HDD with a capacity greater than two terabytes. A one terabyte drive should be more than enough space needed.
