whoever you are, I LOVE YOU!!!

The Best Buy Geek squad wanted me to back up everything and restore my laptop to factory defaults, THEN update my video drivers, THEN RE-Update from Windows 8 to 8.1 to fix this issue.  This was apparently caused by the 8.1 auto update followed by the driver update.  Apparently Windows didn't like it being done in that order.  If you ask me, Microsoft should be fixing the monitors of everyone who had this happen!!!

And thank you for explaining this in easy to understand language.  A lot of times when I look for answers to problems in posting forums, the people posting solutions assume that the average reader knows as much about computers as they do.  For example, I don't know enough to edit my computer's registry, and doing so makes me a little nervous since that's above my level of expertise.  But THIS solution was easy, easy to understand, and, most importantly, WORKED!

With the Envy Recline, as well as some other HP computers, you can adjust brightness, contrast, and more using HP My Display.

  1. From the Start screen, type My Display, and select HP MyDisplay from the search results. HP My Display opens.
  2. Click Adjust.
  3. Use the slider bar to adjust brightness.
When in HDMI mode, such as when you are playing video games, follow the instructions in the Connecting HDMI Devices to Your Computer (Windows 😎 document to adjust the volume, brightness, and more.

Thank you so much for this. I was looking for the solution for many years. I have been using leschat driver for about 2 years and never been able to fix the brightness issue. Now it's working fine from your solution! Thanks a lot!!!!

Spoiler
You may have already  installed HP MY Display tool.(Search or check your desktop for shortcut) It seems like HP MY Display is trying to take precedence over Windows Brightness utility and disables Operating system brightness option.  If you open HP My Display, you will be able to set everything.

Hello Folks

There is so much information in this thread that I cannot work out which of all the suggesions actually worked, any assistance would be appreciated as this thing is killing my eyes, its unusable at night in low light.

hp pavilion 11x2 - running win8.1

Roll-back driver option is not available.

Only the single Microsoft Basic Display adaptor is available to be selected.

That HP My Display thing did nothing, nice sliders that have no effect on the screen brightness whatsoever.

HP (Not that you read this) I'll never purchase one of your products again...!

Hello All,

I found an easy fix that works great for me. Go to http://www.hp.com/country/us/en/hho/welcome.html

Select support at the top, then click on download drivers. On the next page, you can either search for your product or have HP detect it. On the following page, make sure you select your product. On the next page, click on drivers. Where it says select operating system change it to Windows 8(64 bit or 32 bit depending on your device). Make sure it's Windows 8 even though you're currently running Windows 8.1, then click next. Scroll down to driver-graphics. Click to expand. It will list the previous graphics driver that your device was using before the upgrade. For example, mine was AMD Graphics Driver 2013-05-31 , Version12.100.20.0 Rev. A, 181.66M. Click the download button. After the download is complete, it will take you through the setup wizard. When that is finished, you will be asked to restart your device. Go ahead and restart. When your device reloads, you will see that the brigthness button is no longer grayed out and you can adjust it like before. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
