Hello, my computer is a HP p6642f with windows 7 64 bit OS. I need to update my graphics card for gaming, I have tried updating my graphics card from HP but the version my computer came with is the most recent version that HP provides, 8.15.10.2119 dated 20/04/2010. I dont know exactly what graphics card I have, my dxdiag says;

What I need to know is what graphics card I have, what the most recent update is that will be compatible, and how to install the new version over the Customized manufacturer driver. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I received 2 games for christmas, DOOM 3 BFG Edition and Medal of Honor Warfighter Limited Edition. Neither will run and I suspect that updating my graphics card may fix both problems. When I try to load DOOM 3 BFG Edition I get the message:

And when I try to load Medal of Honor Warfighter Limited Edition I get a window saying:
'DirectX device creation error' followed by;
Failed creating D3D device of at least version 10.0 on adapter "Intel(R) HD Graphics" with driver "Unknown". Error is DXGI_ERROR_UNSUPORTED ("Unsuported.").
This is typically casued by not having the minimum required DirectX support in the GPU.
For NVIDIA GPUs, DirectX 10.0 support is required.
For AMD and GPUs from other vendors, DirectX 10.1 support is required.
Ok, for Medal of Honor Warfighter it says my graphics processor doesnt support DirectX 10.1, but the fact is I have direct X 11 which contains everything that DirectX 10.1 contains. So I assume that DirectX or Medal of Honor Warfighter is looking at the name of my video card, comparing it to a list of compatable cards, my card having been customized by the manufacturer is not on the list, and so it refuses to try to load DirectX or Medal of Honor Warfighter? I dont know, if there is some other way to correct the problem that would be great, but I'd really like to update my video card. I have heard that updating a customized manufacturer driver can casue instability, but i'm willing to take the risk. If I cant get a solution to my problem here, I'd like to at least know what my graphics card model is other than just 'Intel(R) HD Graphics (core I5)' so that I can continue searching on my own.

Here are the spec for your HP Pavilion p6642f Desktop Computer. According to the specs, your computer has integrated Intel HD Graphics using the Intel H57 chipset (when a compatible CPU is installed). There is no driver that will allow you to effectively play these games with the extremely underpowered integrated graphics solution that is in your computer. The only way you will get to play these games, is to purchase a new gaming class PCIe x16 graphics card and a new power supply rated for the graphics card. Please see "Dave_G's Guide for Selecting a Discrete Video Card" for helpful information on this subject.

Thanks for letting me know that I need a new graphics card, that saves me alot of running around in circles!:smileyhappy: Would you happen to know if this will work?
VisionTek ATI Radeon HD 4350 512MB DDR2 PCI-E Video Card http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/visiontek-visiontek-ati-radeon-hd-4350-512mb-ddr2-pci-e-video-ca...
Its the only one that I could find that operates on 250w power supply! I dont want to upgrade power supply if I dont have to. Also, will I have to uninstall my current graphics card drivers, do I even have a current graphics card driver since I have integrated graphics?
12-27-2012 08:41 AM - edited 12-27-2012 07:37 PM
I doubt that the the VisionTek Radeon HD 4350 will do the job. The minimum required graphics card specs for the Medal of Honor Warfighter game are a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS or a ATi Radeon HD 3870. The recommended graphics card specs for the game are a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 or AMD Radeon HD 6950. While the 4350 seems like it is better than the 3870, it isn't. You would need a 4870, 4880, 4970, etc. to exceed the 3870. Also, to support a suitable graphics card will require an upgraded power supply. Please determine your upgrade budget, so that we may point you in the right direction.

Thanks for all this EPIC help!:smileyhappy:
I really dont want to spend more than I have to, hopefully under $100. I could go over that if nescesary but those recomended video cards I checked for at Best Buy's website cost around $300, I dont want to spend what a console costs just to play 2 games.:smileysurprised:
I also notice that some video cards require a 12v rail, may I ask what that is and if I have it? Also, will I have over heating problems with more wattage in my tower? If I get a power unit that provides more power than the video card requires will the video card be able to handle the extra juice? I'm thinking of buying one of these power units, depending on if I need 400 or 500 for my video card, is it possible that not all power units will fit in my tower?

Sorry, not going to happen under $100... but not to worry. Lose the idea of Worst Buy and go with Amazon.com or Newegg.com . Forget about the Coolmax I-400 and I-500... at $13 and $16, pure junk. You don't want to skimp here.
All ATX desktop motherboards and video cards require a 12volt rail and all ATX power supplies have a 12volt rail. What differs is the amount of current that the card requires and what the power supply can deliver. Some ATX power supplies on the market may be to large to fit in your computer. If you get a power supply that can deliver more than recommened by the graphics cards... not a problem.
Check out the PNY GeForce GTX 550 Ti (Fermi) 1GB Graphic Card from Newegg.com and the CORSAIR CX500 500W ATX Power Supply also from Newegg.com . At about $130 after shipping and rebates... this is a heck of a deal.

Well, yes and no... the card requires 2 "physical slots" but only connects to one "electrical slot"... the PCIe x16 slot. Your computer has 5 expansion slots... one PCIe x16 slot, three PCIe x1slots, and a mini-PCIe x1 slot. The mini-PCIe x1 slot hosts the factory wireless card and it appears the the other four slots are empty. The GTX 550 Ti card would connect to the PCIe x16 slot and cover or hide the adjacent PCIe x1 slot. This is normal and designed to work like that. It just requires that the adjacent slot is empty.

Thx for pointing me in the right direction! I found this video card that looks like it has better specs and is comparable in price, I think its from the next generation of cards ahead of the 550 ti which makes it 1000 Hz faster and supports more recent DirectX and OpenGl and its also from a step below on the product line which means that although its newer its no more expencive, would you say this would be a better choice for me? EVGA GeForce GTX 650 1GB GDDR5 OC PCI-E
I also found this power unit which from reviews seems like its high quality but slightly cheaper than the one you recomended; Antec 450W Power Supply.
I checked prices on newegg, amazon and best buy, and best buy is auctually cheaper for the power unit and doesnt charge shipping and handling on orders over 20$!
Antec 450W Power Supply
Best Buy: $40.99
Amazon: $47.18 + $14.50 S&H
Newegg: $48.99 + $12.99 S&H
EVGA GeForce GTX 650 1GB GDDR5 OC PCI-E (01G-P4-2652-KR)
Best Buy: $127.99
Amazon: $156.97 + $15.00 S&H
Newegg: $124.99 - $114.99 after 10$ rebate + $5.00 S&H
There are variations of this card on Newegg which all come with assasins creed, the cheapest variation at 94.99 with free shipping! I dont know if theres a noticable differnce between the different variants or what I should be looking for? http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&N=100006657&isNodeId...
The PNY VCGGTX550TXPB GeForce GTX 550 Ti (Fermi) 1GB you recomded costs $109.99 - $89.99 after $20.00 rebate + $6.98 S&S which bring the total to $96.97, 2 dollars more than the GTX 650 which is negligable. The 550 Ti only comes with Duke Nukem cupon which is less attractive to me than the copy of assasins creed, thoguth I know this really doesnt affect any advice you could give me.:smileylol:
Thanks for all the help you've been giving me, I feel like I'm almost there!:smileyhappy:

Sorry, it looks like the pricing and shipping varies between the States and Canada. Please confirm the region you reside in, so I can get on the same page as you.
The Antec 450 watt PSU has two 12 volt rails whereas the Corsair CX500 has one 12 volt rail. One 12 volt rail is typically regarded as being better.
The EVGA GeForce GTX 650 1GB GDDR5 OC PCI-E (01G-P4-2652-KR) is not a "Ti" model. If comparing the 650 series to the 550 series... make sure you are comparing "Ti" to "Ti". Other things to consider... the 650 Ti series uses a 128bit memory bus vs the 550 Ti series 192bit memory bus. The 650 Ti is PCIe x16 v3.0 and the 550 Ti is PCIe x16 v2.x ... the 650's should work in your computer but will be limited to the PCIe x16 v2.x bus in your computer. In other words... it won't utilize the full theoretical bandwidth of a PCIe x16 v3.0 card.
