I have a PNY 16GB 2.0USB Flash Drive which my computer will not open. I have researched various web pages and contacted PNY Tech Support for drivers, which research indicates are missing, and the stated the drivers are built into the computer. They said it is either a MS Win 7 issue orHP issue.

I read another question posted in this forum page, but the information did not work on my computer.

Can anyone help me. From my research it appears to be a common problem.

I spent several hours with Tech Support from MS and HP. HP determined the USB Ports are bad and the tower was sent back under warranty for repair.

Drivers for usb 2.0 devices are in the operating system.

Have you tried the pny 16GB 2.0 usb flash drive in another PC or notebook just to verify that it works?

Do other usb 2.0 devices work in your desktop PC's usb ports?

When you plug in the thumbdrive does Windows respond with a sound and ask what you want to do with the device?

It would help greatly if you would provide a complete product name and product number for your HP PC.

How do I find my product name\number?

Ok, thank you for your reply.

To answer your question:

the flash drive does open in my wives computer

yes, other flash drives and usb items open on my usb ports

when I plug in this PNY flash drive, the computer responds with a beep(?) it does not open the usual window that ask what I want to do with the device. I open the computer window (where all of the drives/devices are shown and the flash drive is not listed. Also I open the window to stop and safely remove devices and the flash drive is not there either.

I am working with a HP Pavilion Desk Top with win7 OS model: p6-2176s product: h2n31aa#aba

Try the Computer Management -->Disk Management snapin that is part of Windows 7 to see if it is seen by the operating system.

You can also invoke the diskpart utility to see if the device is recognized. Open a command prompt ( admin) type in diskpart. Diskpart will start. Type in list volume.

Thanks for the info., however I am not really a computer person so I am not sure how to find Disk Manager unless I can stumble onto it.

I typed in diskpart but it would not let me type in that window when it came up.

Type in computer management .

To use diskpart you have to open an elevated permissions  command prompt . type in command and then right click the icon that appears and click on Run as Administrator. Now when the command prompt opens you should be able to use the diskpart utility.

The usb port on the laptop works fine for printers and other flashdrives. I don't think that's the problem because the flash driver has worked for every other use over the last 4-5 years.  I'm running Win 7.

When I tried to download the driver from the pny site, the only option is to pay for software that will supposidly download the driver.  I refuse to do that!

Hello T-Muskego,

To make sure I understand your situation correctly, I need to ask.

Is this PNY pen drive new, never been used yet? Does it work on other computers?
