Guide for Selecting a Power Supply

Hi, I have an HP pavilion m9600t with the IPMTB-TK (Truckee) motherboard. I'm upgrading to a Nvidia GTX 570 HD but have run into some issues with my power supply.

Being new to this I bought some stuff prematurely and it's costing me in restocking fees. I bought a Corsair 650 watt TX650V2 enthusiast series originally and when it didn't work i figured it was a bad power supply and sent it back for a tx750v2 corsair this time. That too did not work. To give you an idea of the problem, I would install the new PSU and turn on the PC. The power button would blink about 3 times on and off alternating between blue and orange, blue (for on) and then orange (for turning off/sleeping). This would happen for about 3 seconds and then the computer would turn on however it would not POST or anything. When blinking it was actually turning on and off, as the fans would start to crank and then stop and then start again and stop. When on it would be on for about 20 seconds until the power would finally go off, the fans and harddrive would be running but no lights or anything on the mouse, keyboard, nor the monitor.

I called up Corsair and the tech support guy said it was likely because HP has a proprietary spec on the motherboard and that the power supply i bought was for ATX 2.31. After looking at the specs for my motherboard (http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01901210 it mentions ATX connections.

After asking all my friends and others who have changed PSUs, none have ever run into any issues and have never noticed any problems with specs. So now I'm asking those here, what power supply can i get to finally upgrade my PSU and that will work fully with my computer? It doesn't seem like there are old ATX power supplies that will work with my PC from browsing retailers online. Any suggestions as to what to buy or what might be the problem here?

Hi,

I have the same motherboard in my HP e9280t system.  See my signature. Notice that I am using a Corsair HX650 power supply.

The first thing to do is not to install the NVIDIA 570 until you can get the PC stable.

Use the HP Support Assistant to obtain the motherboard revision level for your PC. Alternatively, use CPU-Z (freebie) to obtain the motherboard revision level.  What is the current revision level for the motherboard in your PC?  What bios level is your PC running? Bios level 5.29 is the latest which is the level that I am running.

If necessary, revert back to original 460 watt PSU and make sure that your PC still boots up properly with the old power supply. If your PC work normally with the old PSU, then do a normal shut down. Now reinstall the new power supply and clear the CMOS. If you have made any changes to the bios then note those settings before you power off the PC, replace the PSU and clear the CMOS.

Thanks for the info Dave. I'm running the Truckee 1.03. I just updated to BIOS 5.29.

I haven't gone to try this out yet, but I'll let you know the results. Thanks for the help.

Hi Karl,

Motherboard revision level 1.03 is not good.  You need 1.03E or 1.04E.  Your motherboard is probably on the HP Settlement list for replacement.

Contact HP Support and tell then that you have the Truckee motherboard that is revision level 1.03.  If necessary, escalate the problem to a case manager.

I'm not sure if you've already picked your new PSU or not. (your post is a couple months old now) but I have the same computer as you and just recently hanged my PSU to Antec true power new 650w power supply.

It's a little bigger than the old PSU but it will fit fine and it's been running well for me for about a month now!

Thank you so much for your advice, the CX600 was a wonderful option for me. I bought a HD 6870 as you also suggested.

Card easily fit with room to spare, but went with HIS instead of sapphire. Gaming is like never before, its thoroughly enjoyable, thanks to you.

I came here just to say (and possibly help anyone who may stumble on this post) that I too was having problems with my e9280t.

As mentioned, I'm running the e9280t with IPMTB-TK (truckee) and it refused to accept my new PSU. My old PSU was the original 460w that I wanted to upgrade, because I purchased an nvidia GTX 570 that needed power. I bought a Corsair TX750 V2 that would not work with my computer.

With the 750 hooked up, the computer would turn on (fans/HDD/GPUfan spins/ethernet lights up) but not make it past POST. There was no information being passed from my GPU to the monitor (said no signal).

I put the original 460w PSU back in and it booted up like it always does... so after reading your post Dave about your system, I will try the HX650! I will post back if all goes well (and if I forget, it probably means it works)

I hope no one else has to run across this problem!

Hi M249-M4A1,

The Corsair HX650 is working in my e9280t. The HX650 has 52 amps on the +12v bus which is more than sufficient for the NVIDIA 570. If you have any issues with the HX650 then contact Corsair.

Dave, I just got the HX650 in today and it works PERFECT!! Runs the GTX570 flawlessly, and you can barely hear the fans on either of them!!

I've been looking literally for days trying to find out why my computer wouldn't accept other PSU's.. and was giving up until I came across this thread!
