Looks like I have the same issue but with a twist. My 2509m flickered intermittently for weeks (sometimes it would, sometimes it wouldn't) when first turned on or coming out of sleep mode. Then today, it's black. The twist is if I turn the display off, then on again, it momentarily displays properly for about a second, then goes black again. I can repeat this over and over. Has anyone experienced this? It seems there should be some solution since the underlying display capability still works.
Purchased display February 2011, issues began October 2013.

With the price of new 24" monitors being less than $150, I believe these fall in the category of "disposable." Why? Because even if the repair involves only the replacement of a couple of bad capacitors, the repair would likely cost $50 to $100. Who believes it is cost effective to spend that much to repair a 2 or 3 year old monitor?
Personally, my replacement will be a 24" 1080p HDTV with two HDMI jacks priced at $129 at Walmart. I added a 3 year replacement warranty for $15.

Add mine to the list.
I bought my monitor new from MicroCenter about 2-3 years ago. I originally paid more for the HP monitor b/c I liked the design and thought it would last longer/less issues than the Acer & etc. brands that were available.
Originally bought it to use with a Dell Optiplex but was tired of Windows issues so switched to Mac about 1 year ago. No issues since bought until recently. The display will go off at any time...sometimes not come out of standby. Replaced HDMI cable, use a VGA cable, made sure there was no issue with the computer signal (pushed to dual monitors), cables (tried multiple cables at same time/session)...net net is is the display. I reset the settings to factory, still it turns off for no reason.
Oh well, I guess I'll use it until it fails or fails so much I can't stand it anymore. Acer refurbished 22" monitor that I bought at about same time still works flawlessly. I guess I'll be looking at non-HP from now on.
You just can't trust brand anymore. This applies in TV's also I've found. Only way to counter is to have a good service warranty (i.e. Applecare, etc.)

HP is at fault because it's an HP monitor, regardless of who makes the internal components! It's disturbing that HP won't admit that this monitor is faulty and recall the product or at least give a partial refund or something. They used to make some quality products back in the day, and some of them may still be great, but if they won't stand behind what they sell then I want no part in them anymore. It was their choice to take an LG (or whatever internal component) and slap their name on it.
I expect a monitor to last at least six years or so. To tell the truth, I have never had a monitor go bad before this one. I used to associate HP with quality and endurance, and I still see the occasional HP LaserJet II or III printer still in service even now, but if HP wants to sacrifice quality for a larger bottom line then I will take my business elsewhere. I know this won't affect them in the least seeing how they sell computers by the millions to school systems every year (I helped install 10,000 HP computers into Detroit schools a couple of years ago), but I do make a lot of purchasing decisions for other people and the word will spread eventually about HP's lower quality standards.
I figure that the only way HP can fix this would be to refund sixty percent of the original cost of the monitor to everyone that bought one, seeing how we only got about fourty percent of the use out of it, along with an apology for all of times that we have cringed when we turn the monitor on and hopelessly watch it flicker for an undetermined amount of time.
This is the beginning of the end for HP:
"You're buying an HP? I wouldn't do that, they're not the quality that they used to be before they bought Compaq. I would go with an Acer, Toshiba or Samsung - they're cheaper and they'll last longer."

I have exactly the same issue as described many times above. Flickered for a short time when first powered up, but has not progressed to where it flickers all the time. Good to know it isn't anything to do with the computer. Also sad to know that it isn't anything that's really worth fixing. (The problem does indeed look like a florescent bulb is dying.) Oh well. Perhaps when finances allow I'll go pick up a TV that is computer monitor capable.

I've had exactly the same problem you have now.
The monitor turns on for about 1-2 seconds and then goes black.
Prior to this, it was making some kind of weird buzzing sound for a couple of days even though the monitor was working.;
Under device manager it shows everything working perfectly.
My monitor is a replacement monitor (I purchased) which replaced the first monitor abou 1 years and 1 month (just outside the warranty period) after I bought it. The replacement monitor lasted about 2.8 years.
In other words, I've purchased 3 monitors over the last 4 years and 2 out of the 3 have gone bad.
Didn't see any problem with cable connections.

I know what you mean Linda I have had issues with HP and this is the last straw. I bought the HP 2509m because it looked so awesome and the fact that I could put my keyboard on the bottom was a bonus factor. I have had my monitor for about 3 years and everything was fine up until today. Now its flickering out of nowhere!!! I didn't move it or anything. It just started doing it out of nowhere. I spent $430 dollars for this monitor in CASH. No payments, no credit. I am so pissed that I only am getting 3 years out of my monitor when I have things that last way longer. My last monitor before that lasted me 10 years! 10 years! What does HP want me to do spent $400+ every 3 years? Well they can forget it. I'm just gonna go buy a visio TV and use it as a monitor and call it a day. HP has been letting customers down slowly but surely. My boss bought a brand new tower pc from them and it looked like crap!!!!! The back of the pc didn't even have a real power supply. HP is slowly downgrading the quality of their parts. So do not be surprised!!!!
Because of that same reason I built my own pc.... and now I gotta stop buying monitors from HP as well... I'm so upset!
