I recently got a HP Compaq 8000 Elite with a core 2 quad from a surplus store near a local university and I was planning on doing some MAJOR upgrades to it, installing a corsair cx500 500W PSW, a corsair H60 cooler for the LGA775 socket this machine has to get the upmost best cooling possible for the CPU, and lastly a EVGA GeForce GTX 960 04G-P4-1962-KR 4GB SC graphics card and 16 GB of crucial DDR3 ram compatible with this system.
I have purchased the adapter linked earlier in this thread for the power supply and hopefully, if everything goes well this will all work, and about the issue with graphics cards not getting enough power, I have the full size tower which outputs a max of 75W according to research and the card I'm getting has an external power connecter on it that I will be connecting so it can get the extra power directly from the power supply.
Issues with this setup: Multiple CPU/PSU/Case fan errors on startup as I am removing all the fans and 2 fans (cpu and the one at the back of the case) are getting removed for the fan and radiator from the corsair CPU cooler, and it will of course throw the power supply fan issue since I'm using a standard atx psu instead of the old propriatary HP one, and the last issue being that I won't be able to screw in all 4 screws into the atx power supply because of the size difference, but it should fit in tight enough for this not to be an issue.
So apart from having to press F1 during the system startup this should bring years of more life and way better preformace into this PC. The idea crossed me to put a PCI SSD such as an intel 750 series but I'm not even going to attempt that due to compatibity issues, etc that may occour.
