After following this post about upgrading to a 'real' power supply for the HP Compaq 8000+ series Elite desktop

Original post: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/HP-Compaq-8000-Elite-power-suppl...

It became clear that additional hardware was needed since I'm not a real DIY person regarding electronics. Here was my roadmap from start to finish;

1) Purchased a new 8gig video card (original stopped working) w/4 video outputs (only needed 2 so the other 2 were a bonus!). Most new video cards require additional power requiring a 6 or 8 pin plug from the PSU. And most new video cards require a PSU with a 400 watt or higher PSU.

2) Based on the above forum post I found on eBay this wiring harness built specifically for this series of HP desktops to allow you to install an upgraded PSU;

3) I then purchased through eBay a 850 watt replacement PSU here;

All total (minus the video card) I'm into this project for a little over $60 and I'm here to say, everything works perfectly! Aside from the new PSU screw mounts being different (required a little drilling) and having to hit the F1 key on bootup, I'm quite pleased and the upside is my HP 8100 is running much cooler and all connected Hard Drives (4) have a faster spin-up rate than before. Win-win!

So, if your HP 8000+ series desktop needs a little upgrade TLC, I'd recommend going this route... it is working for me!

Hi,

Drilling to install a PSU?  F1 to boot up?

Big Dave,

If HP did not use a 'proprietary' PSU and motherboard for the 8000+ series towers, none of this would have been necessary!

Correct.
