Computer was working fine on Thursday when I last used it.  This morning, icons on my desktop all look weird and I cannot open any of the icons.  Desktop is showing to be running Windows 8.1 software.

Hi @DooDah1948,

Thanks for reaching out! This is a great location to get resolutions and interact with experts from the community. A very good day to you. 🙂  I understand that you require assistance regarding issues with the computer not opening icons and apps. It will be a delight to assist you here. 🙂

Spectacular effort. Brilliant diagnosis of the issue before posting. You’ve done an amazing job here. 🙂 Kudos to you on that score. 🙂

You are a valued HP customer and we appreciate you greatly for doing business with HP. I have reviewed the situation and it is paramount that we address your issue. Thank you for giving us the privilege to assist you on this platform.

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did this happen after a windows or software update?
  • Did you make any changes to the computer like downloading a new software or game recently?
  • Did it revert to windows 8.1 from windows 10?

For now please try a system restore to an earlier time before the issue started from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03327545

Please follow the option “Restore your computer when Windows cannot start normally” and check how it goes.

Please run complete system diagnostics on the computer from this link to eliminate any hardware malfunction: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03467259

It takes 2 hours to run. Please wait for the results. If any component fails it displays a failure code for it.

Please make a note of the failure code and if that happens the computer needs to be serviced.

To get it serviced, please contact HP phone support by performing these steps:

Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/

Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect

Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"

Step 4. Scroll down and click: HP contact options - click on Get phone number, Case number and phone number appear.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

If the unit is under warranty, the factory warranty should take care of repairs for you.

Hope this helps.  Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂  Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂

To simply say thanksplease click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.

If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂

Take care now and have a splendid week ahead. 🙂
