I have just purchased an HP Pavilion desktop from Currys to replace my old desktop running Windows Vista. Although faster than my old desktop to boot up, it performs miserably when compared to my HP Envy notebook. When left for a while it takes 90 seconds to wake up when my HP Envy and the old Vista desktop are instant.
Comparing with the HP Envy, both are running the same version of Windows 10 and have the same memory. The only difference is the processor. The Envy has an Intel 2.60 GHz and the Pavilion has an AMD 3.6 GHz. Both have had McAfee disabled and the only different software running is my email client, Windows Live Mail on the Envy and Mozilla Thunderbird on the Pavilion.
On initial power up the Envy shows the welcome screen in 3 seconds, the Pavilion takes 90 seconds. Wake up from sleep mode is instant on the Envy but 90 seconds on the Pavilion (but only 4 seconds if it has 'just' gone to sleep).
I expected similar performance so I am dissappointed with the Pavilion. Does anyone else experience this slow response? Are there any settings I can adjust? Could it be Mozilla Thunderbird?

Many thanks for your reply.
I have followed all the suggestions in your link and can confirm that everything on the PC is OK, but it has not resolved my slow booting problem.
As a reminder this is a brand new desktop PC, purchased less than 2 weeks ago. I am comparing it with my Hp Envy notebook purchased 10 months ago. The notebook has additional apps and a lot of data on it. The desktop is as delivered with Google Chrome and Mozilla Thunderbird added (both checked on the compatability troubleshooter) and both also on the netbook.
Where I mentioned in my initial post that the desktop takes 90 seconds to boot from sleep but "only 4 seconds if it has just gone to sleep" I now realise the shorter time was related to the monitor waking up which has a sleep setting earlier than the processor.
I am sure there is something basically wrong with this new desktop. I have also seen it freeze for a few moments when in use but have not noted what I was doing at the time so cannot be more specific on that.
I would welcome any other ideas that you, or anybody else, has.

I recommend you to follow the below steps and check if it helps.
the most problematic setting when it comes to boot time in Windows 10 is the Fast Boot option Enabled by default, this option is supposed to reduce startup time by pre-loading some boot information before your PC shuts off. While the name sounds promising, it’s been causing issues for a lot of people and is the first thing you should disable when you have boot problems.
Disable Fast Startup
- Press Windows key + R button to open Run dialogue box.
- Type control and hit enter to open Control Panel.
- In the search box of Control Panel type Power options.
- Now select ‘Change what the power buttons do.‘
- Click on ‘Change settings that are currently unavailable.’
- Navigate to Shutdown Settings and uncheck ‘Turn on Fast startup.’
- Next click on Save changes and Reboot.

Hi Fossette,
Thanks for that suggestion, it has made a partial change.
A clean startup now takes 25 seconds without a minute of blank screen. That's good, but still not as good as my HP Envy.
Wakeup from sleep still takes 90 seconds, as does a restart. It's the wakeup that's the most frustrating as that's when I want it to respond straight away.
There's still something amiss but we are getting there!

Follow below steps and check if it helps.
a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.
b) In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.
c) On the ‘General’ tab, click the ‘Normal Startup’ option, and then click ‘OK’.
d) When you are prompted to restart the computer, click ‘Restart’
Also, install all the windows updates and disable startup items which you do not need.

Thanks again for persevering with my problem.
Unfortunately there is no change. I still record 90 seconds restart and wake up times. These tests are done with nothing running on the PC.
From Task Manager the only applications loaded at start-up are Catalyst Control Centre, Realtek HD Audio Manager and Windows Defender. BIOS time if that is significant is 4.2 sec.
All Windows programs are up to date. I did note that "Canon Printers Software Release" has been 'successfully installed' 24 times since 26th January, so there is something wrong there.
Do you have a Pavilion 550 handy to test wake up times on to see if this is normal, or if I have a rouge PC?
