Hi, guys.

Just letting you know of my successful project with GPU.

To start with - K5000M is not "supported" and offered by HP.

I have purchased K5000M (that is basically GTX680m).

That was a Dell K5000M for Precision M6700 machine.

The clocks in the BIOS were extremely downlocked.

Performance mode was clocked at 324MHz core/400MHz memory (1600MHz effective)

I did tinker with the original BIOS via Kepler BIOS Tweaker and made that thing work the way I want it.

I used nvflash to write back my modified BIOS and now my K5000M in performance profile (P05) is running @:

758MHz/850MHz (3400MHz effective) without this nonsence Boost feature that Kepler has.

When idling without any load or a little load that does not engage high demand it works at 135MHz core/162MHz memory.

Now my K5000M is faster than a stock GTX 680m 😉

And I forgot to mention the heatsink story.

My machine came without the GPU cooler, because it was a basic model that was utilizing iGPU.

I purchased a brand new HP Z1 GPU assembly from eBay for $35. It was type-A, but hey, I did not want to pay 125 for a type-B.

The only difference between type-A and type-B are the number and placement of the thermal pads.

I got those at the same Bay. 2mm thickness was what I got and I placed them where the VRAM chips and VRM are.

With overclock mentioned above the card is idling @ 48C and goes up to 84-85C while gaming.

The card with these clocks does not throttle when tested with Furmark.

That's all i have to say about that

It's nice to hear others upgrading their Z1 machines.

Can I ask why you chose the K5000M over an 880M or 980M?

HP Recommended
1. The card was $165 shipped and I did not want to spend a fortune on 880/980.
2. It is a Quadro card.
HP Recommended

Ah, well, you can't argue with $165 including shipping!

This is another project that I've completed today.

As you all know HP lists 1x 3.5" HDD or 2x 2.5" HDD configuration.

Not anymore, HP 🙂
