I ended up just hooking it up via the standard DVI cable and hooked my plasma TV up with a Displayport to HDMI cable. Everything is working fine now, so I think the problem is that the HP ZR24W just has some sort of fault in the displayport.
For the longest time, I thought it was my video card, but turns out it's the monitor!

@ off1c3r, mikasa, bcody79, and others with the same DVI-D or HDMI to DisplayPort issue.
The problem isn't with the monitor... it is with the way you are trying to connect your computer to the monitor. The monitor has a DVI-D input and a DisplayPort input. If your computer doesn't have native DisplayPort output, you can't use the monitor's DisplayPort input without an expensive active converter.
But you say you purchased a DVI-D or HDMI to DisplayPort adapter cable??? Wrong, unless it is an active converter there is no way to go from DVI-D or HDMI at your computer to a DisplayPort monitor. The cables you have purchased are designed to go from a computer's DisplayPort output to a monitor's DVI-D or HDMI input. This is facilitated by the graphics adapter sensing an active DVI-D or HDMI connection (via adapter cable) on the DisplayPort output and switching the signaling to DVI-D or HDMI.
Please read DisplayPort.org/FAQs for more information on the subject. You can also check out wiki/DisplayPort for more information as well. From DisplayPort.org;
Q: I just purchased a monitor that only has a DisplayPort connection. How can I hook this up to my computer that only has VGA, DVI or HDMI?
A: There is not a cost effective way to do this. The adaptors that are available only work from a DP computer to a VGA, DVI or HDMI monitor and not the other way around. If you have a desktop you can purchase a graphics card with DisplayPort. Our best advice: Before you purchase a DP only monitor make sure you have DP on your computer.

Hey Las Vegas Wireman -
I'm not retarded...Of course I had the HP monitor hooked up with a displayport cable. In fact, I tried 3 different displayport to displayport cables to make sure that wasn't the cable.
I have a nVidia Quadro 4000 video card, which has 2 displayport outputs and 1 DVI output.
In the end, I hooked the HP monitor up via standard DVI to DVI and I hooked my plasma TV up via Displayport to HDMI. Everything is working like a charm now, but it's made me come to the conclusion that there is something wrong with the Displayport input on the HP ZR24w monitor. Many others are having the same problems that I am.

Never said you were retarded... The post wasn't directed at you or your issue. It was for the edification of those trying to use a passive DVI-D or HDMI to DisplayPort cable to connect their DVI-D or HDMI ported computer to a DisplayPort monitor. This just isn't going to work.

No doubt there is an issue with the ZR24W product. We run about 70 Mac Minis with Displayport output to the monitor (via Startech MDP2DPMM6 cables). I had anecdotal feedback from deployment that a few monitors had "bad Displayports," and they alternatively used HDMI->DVI without issue. I have recently created an imaging station where I use the multi inputs on the ZR24W, and I have now seen the DP input go out to lunch. A port scan reads "no signal" on the DP input where there clearly is one. This "no signal" persists through multiple DP connections (different sources), but power cycling the monitor immediately corrects it.
The monitor is set to defaults, which includes some power-save functions. If I had to guess, that has some effect, but I haven't taken the time to dog it down. I know that there were early issues with DP and recovering from various computer sleep modes too. Since we don't see it widely, it could just be marginal electronics in some units.

There is a good chance the mini displayport to displayport cable is allowing voltage to pass on pin 20. This is a known issue for many cables. My research has shown only Accell adheres to the standard. Also, many users have had success with Gefen cables. Newegg had some good reviews for the Accell cable with information on this issue.

I am having similar issues to what chiarov was talking about.
My DisplayPort works just fine most of the time but if I turn off the monitor for a long period of time regardless of putting to sleep or not then the monitor will lose connection to the computer. I can come back and turn it on but it will just scan and fail every time.
The only solution I could find was a software solution of loading a new monitor to the computer to make it force the monitor to wake up with display changes. Obviously this is freakishly absurd and unacceptable. (Edit: doesn't matter the length of time, I turned it off for 5 seconds and back on but it couldn't find the same signal it just had)
chiarov's idea of turning off the master switch might work, I will try that next time but that certainly shouldn't be a requirement. If this issue persists for me and continues to be ignored by HP then I will just send the monitor back and replace it with another brand's that doesn't have these absurd problems.
Update: I tried the master switch idea from chiarov and unfortunately it did not work for me so I had to resort to plugging in a second monitor to bring it back to life. This is a pathetic flaw in this monitor and I completely regret buying this monitor now.
