HP m8200n desktop
Microsoft Windows Vista

I'm trying to repair a HP m8200n desktop and it will not turn on.  Here's whats happening.  When I plug in the desktop tower, the green light in the back of the tower goes on and is solid.

When I push the button in the front to turn it on a few things happen: 1.The button in the front will blink as i'm holding it in. 2.The green light in the back of the tower blinks. 3.The fans in the back of the tower will spin lightly with no noise.

THe desktop won't turn on.  I've held that button in the front for as long as a minute and nothing.  Wondering if I need to replace the power supply.  Any help is appreciated!

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

I'll be glad to help you 🙂

As I understand the power supply light on the m8200n desktop blinks when the power button is used and the computer isn't powering on or booting into windows,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Did you check with an alternate power source or a different wall outlet?

Did you have any power surges recently due to thunderstorms, etc...?

While you respond to that, there are a few things we need to do,

To identify the issue and find a solution:

This product contains components that are easily damaged by ElectroStatic Discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a non-carpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (like a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap that is connected to a grounded surface, like the metal frame of a PC.

  1. Disconnect all attached devices from the computer, including the power cord.

  2. With the power cord disconnected, press the power button on the front of the computer and wait ten seconds

Plug in the power cord and test to see if the computer turns on. If not, continue using these steps.

       NOTE:

If the power supply fan makes an inconsistent grinding sound or stops and starts erratically, replace the power supply.

  3. Find the defective part.

  4. With the power cord disconnected, remove the case or side panel.

  5. Disconnect all power cable connectors from their connectors on the motherboard and from the back of internal devices (the back of drives). Make sure to label or remember where each cable connects for future reference.

  6. Replace the side panel, plug in the power cord, and examine the light on the back of the power supply:

  7. If the LED is on solid, the power supply is probably good and the problem is most likely caused by a defective component (processor, memory, PCI card) or a defective motherboard. Have the computer serviced, or remove the components and replace them, one at a time, to find and replace the defective component.

  8. If the LED is still flashing (it should not flash with all connectors removed), plug the power cable into a different power outlet that is known to be good. If the LED still flashes, the power supply should be replaced.

  9. If the LED light is now off, plug the power cable into a different power outlet that is known to be good. If the LED stays off, the power supply should be replaced.

I did all the intial tests ...checked the power supply from the wall outlets, i unplugged all the external wires, etc.  I just took the side panels off and I believe I unplugged everything from the power supply inside.  When I plugged it into the wall, the light on the back of the tower was solid.  I'm thinking this means its a bad sign and something in the system has gone bad.  My sister in law said the computer went to a blue screen before the computer died and was like that for weeks.  She said the blue screen said to reboot.  Not sure what to do next.

Hi @loric18,

Thank you for replying,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

I understand you have followed the steps and finally you have tried performing a Power supply test, with all the cables disconnected and just connecting the power cord on the back. Now there is a steady green light on the back. Which clearly indicates that this is not an issue with the power supply but it's a hardware issue with the system board. I would personally suggest you contact our HP phone support for available service options. If your product is out of warranty please choose paid options to get the tech support number.

Please use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:

Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/

Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect

Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"

Step 4. Scroll down and click: HP contact options - click on Get phone numberCase number and phone number appear.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

Keep me posted for any other assistance,
