You need a 7th gen platform so Kaby Lake or newer for Intel Optane to work. It is not only a question of a bios update but also of the underlying system architecture,

I would imagine that support will be available in newer models going forward e.g. when the successor to the HP Zx40 line is released... unless Optane flops in the market, and my prediction is that it is very likely to happen.

A least from quickly looking into the subject, the whole things seems pretty pointless. It seems like a solution to a problem that SSD's have already solved a good few years ago. Take into account also that at least for now it only benefits your boot drive, so you will feel the difference if that drive is a standard mechanical HDD - and if thats the case it seems like a much better option to but even a 128GB SSD than a 16GB Optane  device (price wise it works out around the same).
