Keyboard and mouse only work in safe mode

When I boot up normally, the keyboard and mouse are not working and I can't log in. 

If I boot up in safe mode, both the mouse and keyboard work and I can log in.

In safe mode, when I go into the Device Manager, the device for Keyboards is "HID Keyboard Device" and the device for the mouse is "HID-compliant mouse".  What do I need to do?

If it works in Safe Mode it is likely a driver issue because Safe Mode doesn't load any third party drivers.

I suggest you go into 'Device Manager' and uninstall both the keyboard and mouse. Upon reboot Windows will detect the keyboard and mouse and reinstall the drivers, hopefully fixing the problem.

*You didn't say which version of Windows you are using so I couldn't be more specific about how to navigate to Device Manager.

This did not work.  I ended up taking my machine to an expert.  He was able to erase the hard drive, install W7 and the drivers. Thanks for your help!
