Notebook Laptop
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
I have the HP 15" laptop notebook purchased new on 2015. The OS had an automatic update which restarted the laptop. When I attempted to open a JPEG file, it never opened. Then the computer restarted again by itself, and then started an endless loop of disk checks. Then it asked if I wanted to restore to factory settings. I clicked "yes" and it errored out after 13% restoration. Then it went to ta screen saying it couldn't find the OS system. I have tried many different solutions (removing battery, holding power button down, and it will not leave that screen. My laptop did not come with a restoration disk. I was told by HP that it's internal, so if the software failed, I would have to PURCHASE a physical disk. This is insane because the disk costs $40 through HP. My laptop is unusable now. Please help.

Hi:

You should be able to reinstall W10 by making your own plain W10 installation media (use the Media Creation Tool) from the link below...

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

You can even try the Repair option on the bottom left of th Install Now screen to see if you can repair the current installation.

Ok. I have it on a USB, but the laptop is on the "Boot Device Not Found" screen. No matter what I do, it comes back to this without searching for Windows 10 on the USB. Is there a trick to get back to the Repair screen? I can't do it any other way.

Hi:

Did you use this tool to transfer the ISO file you downloaded to the USB flash drive?

You can't just copy and paste it to the USB flash drive.

The tool makes the USB flash drive bootable.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool

If you did do that, and the PC won't boot from the flash drive, unfortunately, I wouldn't know why that is.

Sorry for the confusion.  I used the download tool to put the ISO file on a DVD disk.  Does that automatically creat it as bootable if I put it in my laptop, or is there another step after burning the ISO file to the DVD?  Thank you for all your help in this matter.

Hi:

The Media Creation tool downloads the ISO file.

Then you need to use the USB to DVD tool to transfer the file to a DVD or usb flash drive, so that either of those are bootable.

If you used both links, then unfortunately, I wouldn't know why the PC isn't booting to the DVD or USB flash drive.
