Hello carolynj345. I understand your Windows XP will restart by itself. I have some troubleshooting that could help resolve the issue, if you want to follow the steps below.
Go to your Start menu, right click where it says “My Computer”, then click on “Properties”. Now you should see a tab that says “Advanced” to the right; click on it. Under where it says “Startup and Recovery”, click “Settings”. Take the check mark away where it says “Automatically restart” and click Ok. This step might resolve the issue.
If not, in Start menu, go to “Run”, type “CMD” in the search bar and hit Enter. You should see Command Prompt open. Type in this command and hit Enter afterward: sfc /scannow
SFC stands for System File Checker, and it scans and attempts to restore corrupted Windows Files. Running this might find a corrupted file or service and repair it. If it asks you to insert your Windows XP CD, please do so, and follow the prompts. Restart the computer after this completes, and see what happens.
If this does not help, another avenue to consider is the possibility of a virus. Some viruses contain written code that force a computer to restart after a certain period of time. I would run a full scan of the computer using your Anti-Virus software, and see what it reveals.
Another source of error is computer hardware. I would make sure that all your computer hardware drivers are up-to-date. You will also need to ensure there are no issues in Device Manager. To access Device Manager, go to your Start menu, right click where it says “My Computer”, then click on “Properties”. Click on the “Hardware” tab, then the button that reads “Device Manager”.
Since there are multiple kinds of errors for Device Manager, I'm going to provide a link that better explains this than I can: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001212.htm
If the issue is not yet resolved, then there is a deeper issue with Windows XP. At that point, I would reinstall Windows XP. I hope I've been able to assist you. Let me know if you have any other questions.

(model: p6380a) (runs: windows 7) Hi, my computer has been updating on EVERY STARTUP it takes 5mins to update before it says it has failed and reverts changes. It the restarts once of twice before fully starting up. This is very annoying as sometimes it will do it again while I'm using it without a warning message, but it never updates just fails and reverts changes.

Approximately six months ago I reformatted my hard drive and the constant rebooting stopped. As of about a month ago, it started doing the same thing again. I reformatted the hard drive again last week and the problem still exists. Again, my system is the following:
HP Pavilion a6528p PC
Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor E2200
Windows 7 32-bit
Running Anti Vir and Office 2013
This has been very frustrating.
