I have installed the two-port HP (NEC) USB 3.0 card in my HP S5-1110 Slimline desktop as well as the driver. The driver install appeared to complete properly.  However, the ports don't work and Diagnostics tells me there is no driver installed.

 

I confess I copied the installation Cd to a memory stick and executed the install from index.html, but I doubt that is the problem.

 

Is there a newer driver available or what is likely to be the problem?.

Hi,

 

Please post the make and model of the NEC USB 3.0 PCI-E card?

 

Try clearing the CMOS.  Now boot into the bios (F10 setup) and make sure that the card is recognized.

The card is the HP model BM867AA.  It came with an NEC driver and there is a downloadable driver on the NEC web site as well.  Both have the same result: The driver appears to install correctly but HP diagnostics say there is no driver.  The NEC utility says USB 3.0 host controller not found.

Did you clear the CMOS as I suggested above?

 

Does the bios recognize the presence of the USB card? 

 

Is the below image of the PCI-E USB 3.0 card the one that you are using?

Not yet. My PC is critical to my work nine hours a day.  Anything with a potential for consuming a lot of time, as many short projects do, must wait until I have a "weekend" on Wednesday.

Yes, as does the HP diagnostics

My gut feeling is that the card is defective. But if so, why would HP diagnostics be unable to identify the driver?

Hi,

 

Did you connect all three ends of the power cable?

 

Your PC has three PCI-E x1 slots so try a differnet slot.

 

The HP diagnostics are probably not setup to run diagnostics on the PCI-E x1 USB 3.0 card.

 

You might try unstalling the driver and let Windows search the network for a driver.

I did not connect the included power cable because all my devices will be self-powered.

I'll do that Wednesday, but I've already tried two different ones.

Did that.  Windows can't find one.

But it should be accurate when it says it can't find a related driver.

I would recommend that you connect the power cable and take that out of the equation.

 

Look in Device Manager.  Do you see card?   Perhaps a yellow exclamation point or yellow triangle?

 

For right now I wouldn't trust the HP Diagnostics program.

I didn't do that but I did  move the card to another slot.  It still doesn't work.  I did not reset the BIOS.

 

Then I added a new USB 3.0 card from Renesas that arrived today.  Same NEC chip set as the HP card.

No yellow triangles. No obvious HP NEC card.  Here's the list:

Interestingly, when I rebooted with both cards present, I got a mesage that the USB driver failed to install.  It must have been referring to the HP card because I installed the Renesas driver before re-booting and the install was successful.

 

It's fairly certain that the card is defective.  I wonder if HP will replace it?  I bought it from an Internet vendor 4 April.

Hi,

 

You have done enough.  If you have a working card then return the bad card.  A card should not be that difficult to get up and running.

 

I had similar issue with a wireless network network. The vendor wanted me to go through a lot of hoops and at that point I said forget it and bought a different brand card.  At some point you have to cut your losses and move on. 

 

BTW, My custom PC has the Renesas chip.:smileyhappy:
