H9-1150
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello, sound stopped working on my computer 'out of the blue'. I never had this issue before: H9-1150

I tried all the self-help troubleshooting; Windows did not detect any problem. I tried reinstalling the driver from what was on the computer with HP support assistant; it did nothing (still has 'no sound' by taskbar icon). I then downloaded the original driver from HP site, and after installing it, gives error message 'Your system does not meet the minimum requirements for this update. Update has been cancelled (9996)'.

Obviously the requirement point is a joke, as it is a quad-core... so there is obviously a problem. Any info is appreciated, TY

I see from the post that you are having no sound from the computer on your HP Desktop PC. Don't worry as I have a few steps to help you get through this concern,

Kudos to you for trying out the steps before reaching out to us.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you made any software or hardware changes on the PC before the issue started?

When was the last time it worked (date)?

Have you tried to perform System restore?

Have you tried to install the drivers from Recovery manager?

Please follow this link for - HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - HP Update Errors

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Step 1: Use the audio troubleshooter

Step 2: Reinstall the audio driver (From Recovery Manager)

Step 3: Update the audio driver

Step 4: Use Microsoft System Restore or HP System Recovery

For detailed steps, please follow this link - HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Error in Windows 7: No Audio Output Device is installed

For further assistance, please use this document - HP Desktop PCs - No Sound from the Speakers or Headphones (Windows 7)

Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you.

    • I tried Windows audio troubleshooter - finds no issue
    • I installed the audio drivers at least twice and restarted the computer - no change
    • I don't think I had installed any new software or hardware - it could be I plugged in an audio player into the 'line in' in the
    • back and had the trouble after that  (but I unplugged it, and it was the same)
    • I tried system restore, but there were no restore points! - Is HP System Recovery different from this? I'd really rather not do system recovery if not necessary - I have quite a few programs installed.
    • The last time it worked was May 19
    • In Device manager it shows NVIDIA audio drivers. However, in Control Panel, when I click on an option under Sound it says 'no audio devices installed'. When I right-click and say update in Device Manager, it says 'up to date'
    • I haven't updated the NVIDIA graphics update in a while, this is simply beaus it i s a very large file, and take time to download. I always wonder if I will gain anything from the update - especially as I am not doing gaming). But would this update help for the audio also?

Hi @NS10,

Thank you for replying,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

I understand you have tried the steps suggested and still having the issue, don't worry as I have a few other steps which should help you resolve this concern,

I would suggest here is to perform a System restore to a previous date where it was all working fine, using this link.

I would suggest please update the BIOS on your PC and check if it helps.

Also, download and install HP support assistant on your PC. It should automatically download and install the latest updates and drivers for your PC.

Refer this link to know how to use HP support assistant.

I would also like to inform that Video card would not affect the audio, however, it isn't helpful only for gamers as it resolves other issues with regards to performance.

I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes for further assistance.

Let me know if those steps worked for you.

If they did, that’s awesome!

Give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

That’ll help us and others see that we’ve got the answers!

Good Luck.

@NS10

It looks like you were interacting with @Jeet_singh, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out,

I'm the Riddle_Decipher & I'm at your service.

I have reviewed your conversation with the last tech and I recommend you delete all the drivers showing under the device manager for Realtek audio drivers and restart the computer and it should install only one entry automatically when restart and this should fix the issue,

If it doesn't, let's start with running a hardware test on the Sound card to determine the issue: Click here for instructions.

Keep me posted for further assistance 😉

I deleted them and reinstalled, but the sound still doesn't work. By teh way, it wasn't Realteck, it was NVIDIA High Definition Audio. I suppose it doesn't make a difference. there are four of those. there was also a fifth with a longer name, but i don't remember what it said. When it reinstalled them, it only installed the first four, not the fifth.

I clicked on the link for the hardware test, but I don't see anything on tha page about sound. TY

Hi @NS10,

Thank you for replying,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

As I understand you tried to follow the steps suggested and still having the issue, don’t worry as I have a few other steps which should help you resolve this issue.

As I see you don’t see the option for the audio test from F2. I would suggest you try to perform a system recovery using the partition available on your PC. This would isolate if it’s a hardware or software issue.

Doing this will wipe off everything and set the computer back to the original factory conditions. So, please remember to back up your data before initiating system recovery. If for some reason the recovery fails. The only other way to install Windows would be to order the recovery media for your laptop and using the recovery media you can install Windows. You can check if the recovery media is available online on www.hp.com/drivers by entering the exact model no. of your laptop. To find the exact model no. click here: http://hp.care/2bygf7l

Otherwise, you could also reach HP phone support to order the recovery media. If your product is out of warranty, please choose paid options to get the tech support number.

Please use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:

Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/

Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect

Step 3. Scroll down to “Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options”

Step 4. Scroll down and click: HP contact options – click on Get phone number Case number and phone number appear.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

Keep me posted for any other assistance,
