After a process of 18+ hours it looks as if things are now abck to normal,I want to thank those who have read my long winded post and replied offered help and encouragement.
I had 218 updates to get installed at once, now all the small glitches are now gone such as programs showing to be still open in task manager though I'd closed them.
Once again thank you for putting up with me and my attitude I was just really afraid thad having that bad hard drive had also effected my recovery images.

Still having probelms every other batch of updates I get locks up on me durring the install process in fact it is shuting my wireless off.
I'm starting to wander if there's a conflict somewhere in my firewall or between McAfee, this has happened with every other attempt to download and install up dates I am certainly stumped here...

Please give more detail on what "locks up" really means.
How many updates?
If it is '50', then doing '50' of anything (push-ups or eating lunch) takes a while.
If it is '100', then it will take even longer.
While your computer is updating, it's possible that it blocks some non-updated-related activity, e.g., web-browsing, E-mail. That is "normal".
Is one of the updates targeting your wireless adapter?
Of course, updating its device-driver can temporarily disable the current device-driver.
After the updates complete, and after a reboot, is your wireless working again?
> I'm starting to wander
This thread is beginning to "wander", like a sheep with its head down, munching away, but I think that you mean "wonder".
> if there's a conflict somewhere in my firewall or between McAfee,
Which firewall?
The one built-in to Windows?
A commercial product like ZoneAlarm?
Some versions of McAfee are strictly an anti-virus product, while some versions also have an "Internet Security" firewall component.
What have you installed?

Can you select just one or two updates, and "defer" the rest, so that Windows Update can do its thing on just a few updates ? That may "prove" that your firewall and your anti-virus are NOT creating any problem.
