I recently inherited a nice HP Pavilion 23 from my parents, but it prompts me for a password on startup. I have no idea what their password was. Is there any way to override this without paying big $$ for Best Buy or someone to do it? Thanks

Sorry, but since we are unable on this forum to verify product ownership, we are prohibited from proving anyone with instructions for bypassing or "cracking" passwords.
This facilitates theft, and I'm certain you wouldn't want us telling someone who stole your PC how to hack into it!
I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor represent, HP

You say inherited, does that mean more than just a gift? (Trying to be gentle).
WIn 10 has a built-in method. But it does rely on the email address or phone # that was entered at setup. It would send the info to the previously selected method. Of course, you would need the email password logon if email, or be at the phone if phone.

Reset the Microsoft connected account password
HP recommends using a Microsoft connected account (MSA) to log in to Windows. With a Microsoft connected account you log into Windows using your email address and the password can be reset using a different device at any time. You do not need a Microsoft or Hotmail email address to set up a connected account. Any email address will work.
To reset your password for an MSA account follow these steps:
- Open an Internet browser and navigate to the Microsoft Reset your password Web page: https://account.live.com/password/reset.
- Select I forgot my password, and then click Reset your password.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to reset your password.
When the password is reset, you will be able to use your Microsoft account with the new password to sign in to Windows 10 and Windows 8. Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet before you attempt to sign in.
For more information about recovering your Microsoft account password see:

If those options are not helplful, just purchase a set of Recovery DVD's from here.

redux1. dancing like a bear.
1: ask parents yet?
2: post if its BIOS , password? locked (aka bricked, then if yes, call actual HP and they will help you if you have proof of owership
we had 20 bricked PCs at work, of 100, due to lost bios pw, the cost to fix it at HP , with our corp. proofs and accounts way too much so scrapped them. all. $100 each IIRC, plus 2 way ship. call HP actual , btw, im not HP,
3: internet search much? do that to learn (not illegal acts)
that Microsoft dot xxx can answer too, they will ask for proofs and you get help.
and more, talk to MS if its NOT BIOS..

Thanks...by "inherit"...I mean...."inherit". My parents both passed away last year. I have the original store receipt from when they purchased it, but nothing else. Since this computer is much better than ours, I was hoping to use it as our primary destop computer at home......just need to get access to it first! But I do understand the concern with getting around passwords....
Thanks for the options below. I will try them.
