Unsecured wireless network.  My Internet service provider has verified modem and router are working properly.  When I view active networks, says No Internet Access.  Running Windows 7 Home Premium.  Note that the connection is working fine for other devices (ipad and smartphone) and was working fine on the Touchsmart until a couple of days ago.  Any suggestions on what I can check to reenable Internet access from this PC?

Hello KenBack:

Welcome to HP's forum. I dought if you turned off WLAN. You can check it. Go to all programs search box type in Services it will display it above. Open it up go down start up list and locate HP Network Devic..... this should be set  started automatic. WLAN Auto Config Started Automatically it should read. If these are ok. Then just un plug your router wait a couple minutes plug it back in and on the back of router press the reset button. Now try connecting your HP Touchsmart computer. You should be able to connect it now.

Every ounce in a while I have to reset the wireless router to connect my HP Touchsmart despite HP DV7 6135dx and Sony computer is connecting just fine. Let us know if you are still having issues. Thank You frrw.

Thanks for your help.  I don't see anything called  HP Network Device.  I do see Network Access Protection Agent (not started) and Network Connections, Network List Service, Network Location Awareness, and Network Site Interface Services,  All of these are started automatic.  Also WLAN Auto Config is started automatic.  What now?  Thanks again!  Ken

Hello KenBlack

Just to make sure I understand the problem, when you try to connect (or when you are connected) to your router Windows reports that you are not connected to the internet? What happens if you try using an Ethernet cable to connect directly to the router?

If the computer is connected wireless to the router but reporting not internet connection, follow the steps below and provide me with the information you see:
1. Open up Command Prompt. To do this use the run/search field from the start menu and type "cmd" and press enter.
2. Type the command "ipconfig /all".
3. Either take a screenshot and attach it or copy down what is shown into your next post.

My  modem and wireless router are working properly.  My HP desktop sees the network, but if you hover over the network symbol in the system tray it says the name of the network on line one and "No Internet access" on line two.  If I try to launch IE, it says the computer is not connected to the Internet.  I get exactly the same thing if try to connect via a LAN cable.  I am able to connect over the same network via an iPad, which is how I am accessing this forum.

i ran IP Config, but don't see a way to get a copy of the output from my desktop PC onto this iPad.  Are ther specific settings I can look at?  Or I can try to get to PC where I can actually send you the screen shot.

thanks.  will be sure to leave kudos when this solve this.

Hello KenBlack

OK, list the following:
- Name of the adapter (description)
- DHCP Enabled
- IPv4 Address
- Subnet Mask
- Default Gateway
- DNS Servers

Please do that for both your wireless adapter and Ethernet (LAN) adapter.

Found a netbook and sent screenshot of IPconfig.  Let me know if its too small to read.  Thanks.

Hello KenBlack

Thanks for the screenshot, I am able to read it.

Based on the screenshot it appears that your computer is communicating with the router, however, it is not communicating out to the Internet.

Tell me about what firewall and antivirus program(s) you are using. I notice in the screenshot McAfee is warning you about your computer is at risk. Your internet access may have been blocked by an application or possibly a virus.

I first would suggest trying the following steps to change your DNS server. The DNS server helps translate URLs such as google. com into an IP Address. Your computer isn't looking for a DNS server rather it is looking to your router. While this can work I have seen some cases where devices don't know where to look because the router doesn't properly handle it. You can always reverse the settings. You don't need to worry about IPv6, just IPv4.

1.Go the Control Panel.
2.Click Network and Internet, then Network and Sharing Center, and click Change adapter settings.
3.Select the connection for which you want to configure Google Public DNS. For example:
◦To change the settings for an Ethernet connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and click Properties.
◦To change the settings for a wireless connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and click Properties.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
4.Select the Networking tab. Under This connection uses the following items, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) or Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and then click Properties.
5.Click Advanced and select the DNS tab. If there are any DNS server IP addresses listed there, write them down for future reference, and remove them from this window.
6.Click OK.
7.Select Use the following DNS server addresses. If there are any IP addresses listed in the Preferred DNS server or Alternate DNS server, write them down for future reference.
8.Replace those addresses with the IP addresses of the Google DNS servers:
◦For IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4.
◦For IPv6: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and/or 2001:4860:4860::8844
9.Restart the connection you selected in step 3.

I'm running McAffee Security Center version 11.6, build 11.0.678, last updated 6/24/2012.  I imagine the "at risk" message is popping because McAfee hasnt been able to connect to get updates for several days now.  McAffee says the firewall is turned off,  When I click to turn it on, it immediately turns back off.  I assume this is because there is no web connection.  Or is this what is causing my problem?

I changed the DNS server as you suggested.  Didn't make any difference.
