Unable to restore  files backed up before reset. used HP program that came with PC. (F11) When I tried to restore the backup it failed.  I seen a suggestion online to use 7-zip. I tried but I am still totally lost. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Typically the place the files were placed (folder) will have files with a .win extension.  There should also be an .exe file in that folder, too.  Supposedly double click the RecoveryMgr.exe. file to start the restore process.  The .exe might be called Backup.exe.  Whatever it is called, try that first.

In the backup folder there is an executable restore file but it fails to restore. I just tried again to check what the error message was but this time it asks to insert disc 2. ??? There is no disc 2.  I backed it up on a 32gb thumb drive.

Sorry, I did mean to say thanks for your help. Just getting anxious.

OK.  When you read about 7-zip and tried that suggestion, was it not working or perhaps you did not know what to do?

It was a combination of not being sure what to do plus after trying to do a restore and they were asking me to insert disc 2. Which I do not have because the backup is on a hard drive.

If 7-zip can see the files and extract them, it should not matter what the .exe program said about a second disk.  Start with a file from the backup folder.  Right click one of the files, pick 7-zip  (actually move the mouse to 7-zip) from the next popup menu.  Another menu will appear, pick open archive.  When it opens the next box and the file you picked is opened, pick "extract" and choose the folder on your hard drive where you want it to be, when it says "Copy to"

If that works, then do the same for each file until completed.
