Hi. I've already posted my question in the main Hardware section & I think re-posting here is bad. Can someone help me with my memory upgrading question?

OK.

First you need to know what type of memory your PC can use and the max (speed and amount):

You can find this from your product specification documents by typing the computer model number into search at HP.com (or at the top right of this page). Go to your Support & Troubleshooting page and then into the Product  Information category..  for your PC model, you end up here:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documentSubCategory?tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&...

Under product specifications you can find a product specification document and a motherboard specification document. Each one of these contains memory upgrade infromation - the motherboard spec is a little more detailed (usually).

According to these documents you should upgrade to the following maximum:

  • Two 2 GB DDR2 DIMMs that support dual channel and share the same part number.
  • PC2-6400 (800 MHz)
  • Non-ECC memory only, unbuffered
  •

Here are some very helpful articles that can show you step-by-step how to access the memory slots:

    Step 1: Opening the case:

Step 2: Removing the front cover

    http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01049945

Step 3: Sliding the CD/DVD out of the way (you don't have to remove it).

Here is a very detailed article on replacing memory - it does not go into about your exact type of case, but you can see how it works:

    Hi there!

Okay so I was looking at what you said here:

*Your motherboard is probably capable of supporting several different memory speeds. If possible, buy the highest rated speed that the motherboard supports. For example if your motherboard supports the highest speed of 800MHz, purchase 800 MHz memory DIMMS. But also keep in mind that the memory system will only operate as fast as slowest rated DIMM. That is, if you have both a 667 MHz DIMM and an 800 MHz DIMM installed, the memory system runs at 667 MHz (slower). All DIMMs would need to be 800 MHz for the system to operate at 800 (faster).

I have a Pavilion a1310n, and I didn't see the highest rated speed that my motherboard supports, or what the memory card speeds on on the specifications page. Please help!

Hi Ingiowolf...   the data for your memory can be found on the motherboard spec page at hp.com .. then support.. then
motherboard specifications.   The data I see are somewhat confusing, but... the highest rated memory supported by your mobo is 184-pin, DDR-400, with a maximum of 1GB stick in each of the four DIMMs. You did not note what proc you're
using, ao for the sake of this posting I will assume you are using the Athlon 64x2 4800+, which should have a frontside bus of 2000 MT.  That would enable use of the DDR-400 memory.  According to the support pages, your machine originally shipped with two- 512-MB memory sticks.  I would carefully check to see what frequency they are --- the white labels pasted over the memory chips -- and stay with that frequency.  Your mobo does not allow for tweaking BIOS settings, so running faster than original memory won't do much.  A recent quote from an OCZ tech executive indicates users see more by running more memory rather than using less memory with higher frequencies!  Good luck.

Get 4 sticks of 1 GB DDR 400. Just make sure they are not ddr2, and they are not the cheaper registered/buffered and you should be great.

hello i am new here but with a somewhat similar problem.

i own a dc7600 small form factor which initially has 256 megs of ddr2 533 ram and now have purchased 512 667 ddr2 ram from kingmax.

well, it doesn't work, system does not recognize it, beeps at startup as if there is no memory installed. fyi, i did take out the old memory first.

i suspect incompatibility of kingmax module with this hp machine. could this be it?

    best and thx

Hi,   Product_name : HP Media Center m487.uk Desktop PC

My computer was supplied with 1GB memory. I wish to add memory. The online
specification for the motherboard (P4SD-LA) shows 4 memory slots, however
the motherboard fitted to my computer (marked P4SD-LA) has only 2 slots.  Both slots are used.  The
specification indicates max memory supported as '4GB (4x512MB)'. My computer
is fitted with 2 x 512MB memory modules. The specification is anomalous and I am confused.  Am I limited to using 512MB memory modules ort can I replace these with either 1GB
or 2GB modules to maximise emory capacity?
    Thanks
