Upgrading Memory

Ah, I think you are right.  I overlooked a point on the specs where it states "(1 x 1 GB)" after the max allowed.  It probably recognizes the 2G module as long as there's nothing else installed, but any addition causes an error state.

Hi, again J-CJ..  whatta bummer after getting the new memory sticks.  You might be able to temporarily salvage the
situation by putting those two older half-gig sticks back in with the 1- 2GB stick... but you do need to see if they'll let you swap for four- 1GB sticks.  OR, as I noted, doing the mobo upgrade.  Vista needs 4-GB's to work well, and then there's the upgrade to W7.  I'm going that route because I have a Lian-Li case from when I built a Soyo Dragon pc years ago.  The case is something of a collector's item -- its a PC-60/65 with a bronze anodized finish and woodgrained trim on the front. (Yeah, this was slightly after my chrome and glass era!)  I hope things work out on your a1709..

Memtest86+ works just fine but the system spontaneously reboots without explanation during daily tasks: This usually happens during CPU-intensive operations (e.g., compiling a Linux kernel or watching a YouTube video in HD) but not always.

The system runs without interruption, though, when I reinstall OEM 512MB DIMM's  (i.e., 2 x 512MB).

What might be causing this?...

FWIW: Replacing the DIMM's resolved this issue. The system runs without interruption now.

i need help please .... i have a HP pavillon a6561.af when i upgrade raMemory , i get a blue screen ... and windows couldn't start 

The new RAM is a Corsair 2 Kits (each kit 2x 2Go) DDR2-SDRAM PC6400 TWIN2X4096-6400C5 G

(i changed also the supply Corsair VX550W and the graphics card  NVIDIA Quadro FX 580 [512MB] , but they work fine ) problems just with the memory ....

I have a p6130f HP desktop. When I go to the HP web page for the motherboard, the M2N78-LA, it tells me that it uses either PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333) or PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066). However, when I go to the HP webpage for the computer, it tells me that it uses PC2-6400 240 pin, DDR2. Which is correct?

You are looking at the Violet3 motherboard specification. You need to use the Violet motherboard (no "3").

Basically, HP works with motherboard vendors to continue to use different modified versions of a "board" - keeping the same silk screen name - in this case, the M2N78-LA. If you search HP.com for M2N78-LA you will find that there are several cases of motherboards that have the same silk screen name.

If you look at your product specification, in the motherboard section, you can find the HP Name - this is the name you want to use. You should also find the correct motherboard specification from the Information section of your PC's support site.

Here's a conclusion to my upgrade: I just finished installing four modules as specified of 1 GB each, and the Pavilion a1709n accepted them without a problem. 

The system fan was having some intermittant failure issues, so I put in a new fan while it was convenient.

After installing new memory, 2x1gb + 2x512mb, my XP boot would not complete.  Safe boot would end on agp440.sys, though ultimately this driver was not bad.

Not wanting to do an OS restore, still searching for answers, a blog was found describing a usb thumb drive interfering with xp boot in this same fashion, once removed, that user's boot finished.

Here, I had not put the usb mouse/kb cord in the same usb port as before, in addition, the mouse batteries were down.
With fresh batts and a changed port, the boot finished just fine.

Unsure if it was the port change or fresh batteries, but it shows that usb can halt the boot process.

Hi i just bought 2gig extra ram to put in my system to make it up to 4gig but it seems that the forth slot has a problem as i seem to get a long beep when i try to use it so at the moment i have only 3gig in my system this would be the first time iv used the forth slot in my system any advice out there?

Yes, USB boot devices can cuase problems, as well as having too much power draw on USB lines.

If I were you, I'd shut everything down, install the two new sticks into slots 1 and 3 - to see if the new memory is good and works in parity with each other.If that works, you can try sticking the old memory into slots 2-4. If slot 4 does not recognize the original memory, then most likely there is contamination inside the slot (blow it out with canned air) or the slot is bad.
