Hi,

Over the past couple of weeks my internet browsers have not been working properly. I normally use Google Chrome, which randomly stops working (jams and says 'not responding') meaning I have to press Ctrl-Alt-Del and end the programme via the Task Manager. This can happen after first putting the laptop on, or after several hours of using Chrome problem-free. When I try and re-load Chrome, sometimes the homepage appears but jams again immediately, and other times the page does not even appear.

When this happens, I try to access the internet via Internet Explorer, which does not work either (but works fine whenever Chrome is working).

There is no prblem with the wifi as the laptop shows I have full signal and I am still able to use the likes of spotify.

I have found that re-starting the laptop helps the situation, but not every time.

I have a HP Pavilion and am using Windows 8.

Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

Hello, @kmillar17 – Hope you are well 🙂

Welcome to the HP Forum! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips.

I understand that you are having issues while browsing via Chrome or Internet explorer. Let's try and reset the browsers to try and fix the issue. To reset the chrome, follow the steps below:

  • At the top right, click More (Three horizontal dots) and then Settings.
  • At the bottom, click Show advanced settings.
  • Under the section "Reset settings,” click Reset settings.
  • In the box that appears, click Reset.

Also, if you are using Internet explorer, try resetting the same. Press the “Windows key” + “R” to get the “Run” window. Type “inetcpl.cpl” and press ok to get the internet explorer properties. Go to “Advanced” tab and select “Reset” option to completely reset the internet explorer. Now open the internet explorer and try browsing.

Those steps should do the trick, let me know the outcome. Thank you!

Cheers 🙂

Hi,

Thanks very much for your reply. I followed those steps and my browsers worked problem-free for around a week, but now it has just happened again- Chrome suddenly stopped working, wouldn't respond, had to be ended via the task manager, and I had to restart my laptop to get back on to Chrome.

Any further suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Katy

Thanks for your help there. I followed the steps in the link you sent, but Chrome has once again just crashed like before.

Any other suggestions for a solution?

Thanks

Hello@kmillar17

Thank you for the update.

Appreciate all your time and efforts.

Install all Windows updates and run HP HP Support Assistant to update drivers and check if this resolves the issue.

Meanwhile, May I know the model name of the PC?

keep me posted, cheers:)

It looks like you were interacting with @Sizzlingsum_13 but she's out for the day

And I'll be glad to help you out.

The Riddle_Decipher is at your service 😉

I went through the entire thread and had one question, did you follow all the steps and I mean using every article shared by the last techs? (it's simply weird that the issue persists if that's a yes),

That said, I don't leave any stone unturned and hence as you have windows 8.1 shipped along with the PC (considering you've made no upgrades or downgrades in the OS) please follow the below steps:

  • Start the notebook and let Windows fully load.
  • Hold down the Windows key and press R
  • In to the Run box type MSConfig and hit enter.
  • In the System Configuration window, click the Startup tab,
  • remove the tick next to each startup item and then click Apply to make the change.
  • Reboot the notebook for this change to take effect and see if your browsers all run Ok
  • If they do, re-enable one startup item ( start with your Security software ) at a time,
  • click Apply and reboot then check if the browsers still run ok.
  • Keep doing this until you encounter the crashing issue with your browsers and you will know the last program you set to start with Windows is causing the issue.

Feel free to post your query for any other assistance as well,

It's been a pleasure interacting with you and I hope you have a good day ahead.
