My computer is running Windows 10. it has a capacity of 917.66 GB and has only 1.10 GB of free space. I use my desktop for only the most basic of tasks--ITunes podcast synching, retrieving emails, playing CDS or music I've burned from a CD into my ITunes program, and browsing the web. No gaming, no movie or TV watching, no production of videos or the like. What programs can I safely remove from my computer to free up a reasonable amount of disk space? Thanks.

Welcome to HP Support Forum. How do we know all programs on your computer to be able to say which one(s) you can remove. But for start, please move all songs, videos .... from iTunes to external portable HDD. On a normall computer, programs and Windows use around 40GB to 60GB.
One of my test machines which only has 128GB SSD and I throw many test programs on it but after few years I still have 30% free space.
Regards.

It's not programs that are filling up your drive.
My complete Win10 setup takes less than 30GB and that has a bunch of apps, as well as the OS.
Win10 does perioding Upgrades and now has Cumulative Updates being applied frequently. This can take up a LOT of space.
There may be folders on your C: drive named $Windows.~BT and $Windows.~WS. These are used by the Upgrade tool to store files needed for the Upgrade. If these are hidden, will have to change your settings in File Explorer to see them, but once you find them, then remove the folders.
Also, you may need to remove the Windows.old folder. Here are the instructions: http://www.howtogeek.com/223821/what-is-the-windows.old-folder-and-how-do-you-delete-it/
Additionally, here are some Win10 forum threads about recovering disk space:

Once these are gone, you have a lot more free space in the C: drive.
Good Luck

I am curious. What partition are you stating only has 1.10 GB free space. In the most basic setups, there are 2 partitions on the hard drive. The "C" partition is used for all functions, OS, programs, data files. The small "D" partition is reserved for the Recovery Partition, to perform a complete re-install. It has optional features. It is never to be used for any other purpose, like storing data. The small "D" partition might be 10-12 GB, but has a small amount of free space, maybe 1-3 GB.

Custom Asus Z97D, I7-4790k, 16GB RAM, WIN10 Pro 64bit, ZOTAC GTX1080 AMP Extreme 3 fan 8GB RAM, 500GB SSD, Asus PB287 4k monitor, Rosewill Blackhawk case and 750W OCZ PSU.
