If you have set a "BIOS-password", type that first.
As soon as you press ENTER to submit your password,
tap F10 repeatedly.

The HP splash screen should list a set of items along the bottom of the page, one of those is the info to enter the BIOS. (it may be called setup) It is usually ECS or an Fkey.
I'm not an HP employee.

This is a new desktop computer. When I turn it on, and hold down the F10 key or if I hold down the escape key it will not go into the bios.
The third time I booted it up, a black screen appeared and had the message "power-on password required".
It being a new computer I had no idea what the password was. So, I am an experienced computer user for 15 years, having built one from scratch and repaired many with software or hardware problems. I was familiar with the F10 or esc method. Somehow, I kept using different key presses and finally got into bios and went to the "advanced" tab and selected "enter new password". I did. The computer runs great. I hate having to put in a password to turn it on.
I removed the check mark in windows in order not to have a password to get into windows.
I guess I will have to take the computer back to Staples and see if their tech and remove the "power-on password" feature. Thanks for any help {Personal Information Removed}

unable to get a splash screen. This is a mouse driven desktop. The only screen that comes up is the "power-on password" screen. And of course I have to put in a password which I hate. I disabled the password feature in windows and would like to stop the power-on- password from working. I have tried to get to set-up because I know my way around in setup having worked in it on many computers in the 15 years I've been working on my own computers and my friends. I am dumb founded because I have used the keys you suggest and that black screen wanting the password boots first even though I am holding down either the esc key, the F10 key or F11. I call it the black screen of death. I just put in my password and to on into windows. I wish I could disable that black screen password required feature. I guess I will have to take the computer back to Staples and see if their tech and disable it. Thank you, {Personal Information Removed}

Hello.
To enter BIOS press the power button and immediately and repeatedly (DO NOT keep it pressed!!!), press the F10 key.
In the ADVANCED tab choose Power-On Password, cancel the password inserted, confirm the new password with a blank filed and save it.
You have succesfully removed the power-on PWD.
Do the same if the User password has been set.
Bye.

> STAPLES guy worked for two hours.
Almost every desktop computer (and almost no laptop/notebook computers) have a method (move a small jumper on the motherboard) to "Clear BIOS settings", which will delete any power-on password. It should take 5 minutes to do the "research" on which jumper, and 5 minutes to follow the procedure. Definitely, not 2 hours. Sigh.
