EliteDisplay E231
Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

Hello,

I have a HP EliteDisplay E231 monitor which I've been trying to connect to my Mac mini without any success.

I tried VGA to HDMI, and DisplayPort to HDMI cables (HDMI being on the Mac side) but to no avail.

Are they compatible at all, and if yes what do I need to do to make them work?

Thanks

That model monitor has the connections and capabilities to work with many different types of sources.  Since a Mac mini does not have a monitor, I assume that what you are saying that there is not a connection that the Mac mini will auto out to this monitor, correct?  Since the version of the Mac Mini is not given and the adapter, I can only assume, but I would think a display port or Thunderbolt (Mac side to ----) any of those would give an acceptable connection.

Using the intended Apple connector to monitor should give auto connect.  See HERE for explanation

 Hi TheOldMan,

thanks for your reply.

Mac mini is 2014 with El Capitan OS.

I tried using the following cables:

VGA on the monitor side to HDMI (male) on Mac mini  - monitor didn't turn on, only "No signal" banner appeared  as in:

                    VGA - > No signal

                    DVI -> No signal

                    DisplayPort ->No signal

Then I tried connecting DIsplayPort-HDMI cable connecting DisplayPort to the monitor and HDMI connector to Mac mini with the same result.

As Mac mini has no display, I cannot try and adjust any settings on it while being connected to this HP monitor.

I hope this gives a clearer picture.

I am not much of a Mac person but HERE is the spec page for a Mac Mini 2014.  On that page it states:

Video Support

  • Support for up to two displays at 2560 by 1600 pixels, both at millions of colors
  • Thunderbolt digital video output
    • Native Mini DisplayPort output
    • DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter (sold separately)
    • VGA output using Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter (sold separately)
    • Dual-link DVI output using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter (sold separately)
  • HDMI video output
    • Support for 1080p resolution at up to 60Hz
    • Support for 3840-by-2160 resolution at 30Hz
    • Support for 4096-by-2160 resolution at 24Hz

So if you are using the HDMI port, it should work right off just using HDMI to HDMI.  Using any other with an Apple thunderbolt adapter to VGA or DVI should also produce results.  Are you certain this Mac Mini is working?  Until there are satisfacoty results, try a different monitor just for tests.

Hi,

thanks for the clarification. Mac mini works fine, I have no problem connecting it to a Samsung monitor at work (HDMI-HDMI).

Now  I would like to make it work with HP EliteDisplay, but can't get it to work. It simply doesn't recognize any signal coming from Mac.

The HP monitor has 3 inputs (Input signal VGA (analog), DVI-D, DisplayPort (HDCP support on DVI-D and DisplayPort). I tried connecting VGA (with an adapter) and DisplayPort from monitor side to HDMI on Mac mini side and the result is the same, no signal recognized.

It obviously won't automatically recognize the monitor.

I started thinking it could be a settings problem, but what to set and whether on Mac mini or on the monitor, I still cannot figure out. 🙂

Thanks for your effort in any case. 🙂

HERE IS THE MANUAL for the monitor.  Unless the monitor is not in AUTO DETECT, it should work as described. Verify and change perhaps to auto detech through the Menu button on the monitor.   Have you tried this monitor on a different PC, just to test?

Thanks, I did check the manual, and I'll try playing around with some monitor settings to see if that will change anything.

I still hate it that it's not "plug and play", though. 🙂

Thanks for your help.
