What is the difference between logging off and lock 

 

I have a system 7 64 bit

"Locking" your computer is to leave everything open and running as-is so that all activity continues in the background. You only lock it so that others can't gain access.

Logging Off is to close out of everything running and log your user account completely off, which would require everything to start up again when you decide to log in next.

I just clicked on one of those buttons highly likely logging off and the network completely disappeared. 😞 I had to call IT specialist to get the issue corrected.
